2. What is a transgenic animal?
• Transgenic animal: An organism that has had
part of another species' genome transferred
into its own through the techniques of genetic
engineering.
• Example of a transgenic animal: Mice

3. How do you create a Transgenic
Mouse?

• (basic steps) Standard Transgenic Approach:
1. Microinject fertilized mouse eggs with
transgene

2. Injected eggs are implanted into a foster
mother

3. Offspring are then born “Pups”; possible
founders (have the transgene)

4. Potential founders (pups with the transgene) are
found using a PCR analysis and or southern blotting
(Black offspring = founders)
5. Founders can then be further analyzed for affects
of that transgene
