Guy Fawkes and a group of men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament with King James I inside in 1605 to protest the King's treatment of Catholics. Guy Fawkes hid 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellar but was caught after an anonymous tip to the King. Though he was tortured, Fawkes confessed and was executed for treason. Now every November 5th, people in England celebrate Bonfire Night by making bonfires, watching fireworks, and eating foods like baked potatoes, toffee apples, and parkin cake to commemorate Guy Fawkes' failed Gunpowder Plot.
