Learning More About Australian Triathlon
1. Learning More About
Australian Triathlon
The triathlon event is a multi-disciplined sport where the
participant takes part in swimming, cycling, and running. All
three events must be completed in order and the one who
gets the best total time at the end will be declared the winner.
2. The distances that are set for each event, thus for the total
triathlon event vary according to the experience and difficulty
assigned to each race. The International Olympic Guidelines
set the most common distances. This involves a swim of .93
miles,or 1.5 kilometers, a bicycle ride of 24.8 miles or 40
kilometers and a run of 6.2 miles or 10 kilometers.
What is known as the Ironman competition is more stringent,
as the distances are longer. The swim is for 2.4 miles or 3.9
kilometers, the bicycle competition is for 112 miles or 180
kilometers, and the run is the marathon distance of 26.2 miles
or 42.2 kilometers.
The Distance of Each Event
3. IRONMAN Australia
The triathlon competition in Australia is alive and well as there
are all kinds of activities and interest after 30 years of
promotion and competition. Australians race the same
distances as anyone else, so there is no difference there.
Ironman Australia is just about 30 years old, which now is held
in Port Macquarie, New South Wales.
The swimming event is done in the Hastings River and the
bicycling event is conducted along the Pacific Coast, then the
running portion goes right through the center of Port
Mcquarie. This is a very popular spot and people come back to
this particular event year after year.
4. The Importance of Transitions in Triathlon
The one interesting activity to watch during these events are
the transitions, or the art of changing gears while the athletes
are on their way from one event to another. Almost all of the
participants use wetsuits during the swimming competition to
keep from losing body heat. Getting the wetsuit off, putting
on socks (or no socks), cycling shoes, and helmet is the
process of the transition between swimming and cycling.
Then when the cycling is completed, discarding the helmet,
exchanging cycling shoes for running shoes is the order of the
day. Each participant practices these transitions so as to pare
down the time spent during the transitions to as little time
spent as possible. The time that is used up during the
transitions counts for the total, overall time so the athlete
attempts to cut the time for transitions to the bone.
Most tri-athletes have the most difficulty between the
swimming and the cycling, as sometimes getting the wetsuit
off in a timely manner can be difficult. Then getting shoes on
and getting them fit snugly so the will give optimal function
can take some time, especially if they have to be laced and
tied. Plus most riders will use goggles and a head cover to
keep aerodynamics in play.
5. Athletes will practice these transitions very carefully so they
get everything down to a routine where they are performing
the transition. It then becomes a part of the system so the
athlete does not have to think about what is being done or
make decisions, as a definite pattern of procedures are being
followed.
Transitional areas are set-aside at the end of the swimming
and the cycling, and depending on the size of the group of
participants, there is the possibility of an athlete's gear being
kicked aside and momentarily misplaced or lost. Or the
athlete might momentarily forget where his gear is stowed.
The transitions are important because in a close race, little
things can mean a lot, especially over such long distances.
