IMPORT SUBSITUTION(1960-1983)
 A Policy calling for the local production of
goods & services that would otherwise have
to be imported.
LIBERALIZITON OF IMPORTS EXPORTS
(1983-1990)
 Removed import barrier by changing the
policy of trade
STATEGIC TRADE POLICY(EARLY 1990- PRESENT)
 Identifying the targeting industry for
international competition
 TRADE DISCONNECTION- Occasioned by two
world war
 Drop of coffee & banana prices
 Agricultural production was dropped from
40.9% -25.2% of G.D.P
 Costa rica could not remain cost competitive
in the types of products exported from the
E.P.Z (economic processing zone)

not being utilized to best advantage

I. Establish export processing zone(e.p.z)

 Cinde official make costa rica attractive to
computer chip gaint i.e INTEL

& gamble.

index(H.D.I)
 Costa Rica is ranked 53th with an Economic
Complexity Index (E.C.I)
 An INTEL microprocessor facility in Costa Rica is
responsible for 20% of Costa Rican exports.
