The Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) held trainings to introduce its Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) database and teach database management. ATI conducted a basic computer literacy training for AEWs to familiarize them with computer and internet use. This will allow AEWs to more efficiently access and input data into the new online AEWs database. Additional trainings are being conducted regionally to instruct AEWs on database navigation and management. The trainings aim to equip AEWs with new technical skills that can enhance their work in agricultural extension.

ILIMAN, Quezon City -- Through the
years, since the e-Learning for agriculture

demand and clamour for new e-Learning courses.
Since then, the Agricultural Training Institute

4. ATI-RTC I Conducts Basic
Computer-Internet Literacy
Training for AEWs
S
TA. BARBARA, Pangasinan - Technology will serve today’s
extension workers well - in entry level work and beyond, in
further study and lifelong learning, and in their personal lives
as inquisitive, reflective, discerning and caring citizens. Advanced
technologies are more pervasive today than they have ever been,
and their uses are expanding continually. Information Communication
Technology (ICT) is significantly enhancing and altering human activity,
and enabling us to live, work, and think in ways that most of us never
thought possible.
To enable its clientele to enhance their capability in computer
operations, the Agricultural Training Institute Regional Training Center I
(ATI-RTC) conducted a “Training on Basic Computer-Internet Literacy” for the
Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) last July 26 to 27, 2010.
The two-day live-in training aimed to familiarize, equip and strengthen
the capabilities of extension workers for a more effective and efficient delivery
of the program and also, update them with the new technology especially
the e-Learning component of the e-Extension Program. The said training was
participated in by 30 AEWs and two ATI staff.
Topics discussed were on the “Introduction to Computer Systems and
Common Computer Applications” by Franklin A. Salcedo, “Internet-Creating an
email account/address, the e-Extension Program: Registration & Enrolment to
the e-Learning Courses” by Maricel D. Dacapias, e-Extension Coordinator of ATI-
RTC I.
What they can say about the training
Learning is a continuous process, no matter what age one is in. The Training
on Basic Computer-Internet Literacy was said to be an example to this statement.
According to Carmenchita Balderas, 41 years old, Agricultural Technologist
talagang first time na makahawak ng laptop.
Salamat at
Another impression was given by Clarito Corpuz, 52 years old,
Agricultural Technologist of Pozorrubio, Pangasinan. He said that “ang course
of a single person only. It means may taga-encode ako, siya
Training and extension has proven to be an avenue
of continuous learning or education no matter of
what age we had. (MDDacapias,ATI-RTC 1)

An e-Learner's Quest for
Knowledge
M
auro Rico or Mau to his family, architect and a careful thinker, moved
his family to the United States in 1986, where he stayed and worked
until 2006. He decided to retire early and go back to his home province,
Albay, to pursue his dream of building a farm he and his family will truly enjoy.
Even when he was still in the US, he encountered the Philippine e-Extension
website while scrolling through various sites in his computer. He completed five
online courses on the production of bamboo, seaweeds, citrus and goats -- one
after another.
He tried his hand in producing compost in his backyard. He talked about
compost fungus activator and effective microorganisms almost like an Agricultural
Technologist. He wants to go into vermicompost production in the near future too.
His thirst for knowledge made him pursue leads that would bring him closer
to his dream. He surfed the internet and sought ways to contact people who can
guide him along. He corresponded with ATI’s e-Learning Process Adviser, Jose
Rey Alo, and the e-Learning Coordinator in Bicol. He read about Arlene Dayo,
Agricultural Technologist of Goa, Camarines Sur, ATI scholar and trainee – a
tireless disciple and advocate of natural farming -- ATI’s favorite contact person
on organic farming. Together with the ATI e-Learning Coordinator, Mau traveled
almost three hours from his home in Legazpi City to Goa to meet Arlene and visit
organic farms she helped set up.
Personal setbacks did not stop him from his quest. Instead he chose to take
things positively. Early this year, his elder brother met a fatal car accident in the
US. He decided to transform the coconut land left by his brother into a multi-level,
sustainable natural farm. Even the El Niño that was forecasted to last until May
2010 was not stopping him. He would be going back to the US for his daughter’s
wedding this May, but he planned to work double-time when he gets back home
in June, just in time for the exit of the dry months, to bring to fruition his dream
farm.
He recently visited ATI’s Regional Training Center in Bicol (ATI-RTC5), where
he met the Center Director, Efren Sabularse. He is presently enlisting ATI’s help to
find good sources of grafted seedlings of fruit-bearing trees, and probably some
training courses in the future.
The ATI-RTC5 salutes this very determined and enthusiastic e-Learner, farmer,
and Filipino. With people like him, agriculture should evolve into an innovative,
productive, and profitable venture. (PBImperial, ATI RTC 5)
