• 12:15 – 12:30 Q&A
• Adjourn
3. What is Green Design?
To significantly reduce or eliminate the negative
impact of buildings on the environment and on
the building occupants, green building design
and construction practices address: sustainable
site planning, safeguarding water and water
efficiency, energy efficiency, conservation of
materials and resources, and indoor
environmental quality.
-USGBC
4. What is Green Design?
How do we love all children of all species for all
time?
-William McDonough
5. What is LEED?
Leadership in
Energy and
Environmental
Design
The LEED Green Building Rating System™ is the
nationally accepted benchmark for the design,
construction, and operation of high performance
green buildings.
6. CATEGORIES OF LEED
new
LEED-NC construction
existing
LEED-EB buildings
Commercial
commercial
Buildings
LEED-CI interiors
core &
LEED-CS shell
LEED for Homes Residential
neighborhood
LEED-ND development
7. • In pilot since late 2005, due to launch later this
year – Green Build
• Open to any qualifying projects
• Follows residential code – 3-stories and below
• Concurrent pilots for mid-rise (4-6) and high-rise
(7 and up) residential buildings running now
• Differs from other LEED products in delivery
system – administered locally by ‘Providers’
8. LEED for Homes Categories
Innovation & Design Process (ID)
Integrated project team, plan for durability, allow for innovation
Location & Linkages (LL)
Locate homes efficiently, link to existing infrastructure
Sustainable Sites (SS)
Preserve natural ecosystem on the building lot
Water Efficiency (WE)
Reduce potable water usage, use rainwater/grey water
Energy & Atmosphere (EA)
Reduce emissions caused by energy use, ENERGY STAR
Materials & Resources (MR)
Reduce environmental impact of building materials
Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)
Provide a comfortable and healthful indoor environment
Awareness & Education (AE)
Educate homeowners (operators) about green building

ID 1.2 Integrated Project Team 1pt.
ID 1.3 Design Charrette 1pt.
17. Durability Plan
ID 2.1 Detailed Durability Plan; (Pre-Construction) Mandatory
ID 2.2 Third-party verification of Durability Plan 3 pts
18. CIR’s and ID’s
Credit Interpretation Request— an alternative way of achieving the
same intent as an existing LEED credit. It is achieved by
requesting permission to meet the “intent” of a credit using an
approach that is different from the stated “requirements,” or simply
a clarifying question not addressed in the rating guide.
Innovative Design (ID) — a way of earning one or more LEED
points for technologies or strategies that are not included in the
Rating System but offers substantial environmental benefits. It is
achieved by requesting permission for a credit / measure that is not
included in the current rating system or going above and beyond an
existing credit.
19. What is LEED-ND?
A LEED rating system being developed through a
partnership with
– Natural Resources Defense Council (Smart Growth)
– Congress for the New Urbanism
A rating system that combines elements of smart growth,
urbanism, and green building
LL 1 LEED-ND Neighborhood 10 pts
20. Site
Stewardship
SS 1.1 Erosion Control (During Construction) Mandatory
SS 1.2 Minimize Disturbed Area of Site (if site is > ¼ acre) 1 pt

WE 3.1,3.2 High and Very High Efficiency Fixtures Up to 6 pts
23. 81
Design and build an ENERGY
STAR labeled home.
EA 1.1 Meets ENERGY STAR for homes Mandatory
24. What is ENERGY STAR?
• Third party labeling system for homes that meet
the EPA criteria.
• Home Energy Rating System (HERS)
accredited professionals
• HERS Index: Reverse scale 100 – 0
100 = code minimum (worst legal)
0 = net zero energy
