This requires a mechanism threw the
election choose their
representatives at regular
intervals and change them if the
wish to so. This mechanism is called
election. Therefore, elections are
considered essential in our time for
any representative democracy.
1.They can choose who will make the
laws for them.
2.The can choose who will form the
government and take the major
decisions.
3.The can chose the party whose
polices will guide the government
and law making.
1.Every one should be able to choose. This means
everyone should have one vote and every vote have
equal value.
2.There should be something too choose from. Parties
and candidates should be free to contest elections
and should offers some real choice to the voters.
3.The choice should offered at regular intervals.
Election must be held regularly after ever few years.
4.The candidate preferred by the people should get
effected.
5.Election should be conducted n free and far manner
where people can chose as the real wish.
Election are thus all about political competition. This
competition takes various forms. The most obvious from the
competition among political parties. At the constituency
level, takes the from competition, election will be came
pointless.
but it is good to have political competition ? Clearly,
electr0l competition has many demerits. It create a sense of
disunity and ‘factionalism’ in ever locality. You would have
heard of people complaining of ‘party-politics’ in your
locality. Different political parties and leaders often level
allegations against one another. Parties and candidates
often dirty tricks to win elections. Some people say that this
pressure to win electoral fight dose not allow sensible long-
term policies to be formulated
The country is divided into different areas for purposes of
elections. These areas are called electoral constituencies.
The voters who live in an area elect one representative. For
lockssabha elections. Our country Is divided into543
constituencies. The representatives elected from each
constituency is called a member of parliament or an MP. One
of the features of democratic election I that every vote
should have equal value.
The makers of our constitution thought
of a special system of reserved
constituencies or the weaker sections
are reserved for people who belong to
the scheduled castes [SC]
and scheduled tribes[ST]
In a democratic election, the list of those
who are eligible to vote is prepared much
before the elections and given to everyone.
This list is officially called the electoral roll
and is commonly known as the voters list.
Every person who wishes to contest
an election has to fill a ‘nomination
form’ and give some money as
‘security deposit’.
In our country such campaigns take
place for a two week period between
the date of announcement of the final
list of candidates and the date of
pooling.
Every person whose name is on the
voters list can go to a nearby
‘pooling booth’ situated usually in a
local school or a government office.
