The document discusses the benefits of the Advantage Workplace Wellness (AWW) program for commercial truck drivers. AWW has developed a wellness program called "You Turn for Health" that is tailored specifically for commercial drivers through mobile access and on-site education. It tracks metrics like health screening results, activity levels, and outcomes to demonstrate measurable returns including reduced absenteeism and healthcare costs. The document emphasizes that wellness programs have been shown to save $3.27 for every $1 spent by lowering medical and productivity losses, and are viewed as a necessity rather than a luxury for controlling rising health benefit costs.

6. THE IMPACT
“Even a 5% increase in activity among your workforce can significantly
reduce the costs of medical care, worker’s compensation
and lost productivity.” CDC 2010
Changing behaviors significantly
impacts the bottom line and creates a
positive, productive workplace.
Healthy employees, healthy bottom line.
7. THE NECESSITY & THE OPPORTUNITY
“In challenging economic times, wellness and
other forms of preventive care should be viewed
as a necessity rather than a luxury.”
Dr. A. Aglessi, Wm. Backus Hospital
Medco’s 2009 national study (Medco 2009) on prescription benefit management trends shows
that nearly 60 percent of plan sponsors point to wellness programs as the single most important
influence on healthcare cost containment over the next 3 to 5 years.
Studies from 2010- 2012 indicate a 65% increase in the number of corporations and municipalities
who have reported implementing wellness programs in an effort to control skyrocketing health
costs. Results have shown that any investment in wellness yields benefits including
decreased absenteeism reduced medical costs and better morale.
Additionally, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), $1 billion in
funding has been allocated to wellness and prevention programs, and Congress is considering
proposals to provide tax credits or other subsidies to employers who offer wellness programs that
meet federal criteria. Current tax law allows for wellness tax credits- the expense of an employer-
provided wellness program for employees is deductible by the employer as a business expense
under section 162.
