What is Louse (Plural. LICE) ?
 Lice are very small insects that
infest and lives on different
parts of your body.
 Lice feed on human blood and
cause intense itching in
affected areas
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and

 pediculus humanus capitis (head
louse)

What is Pubic Lice?
 Pubic lice are tiny insects that
live on humans, usually in the
pubic hair. Infestation with
pubic lice can cause severe
itching.
 It is caused or transmitted by
crab lice which are known
as pediculosis pubis or
phthiriasis pubis

How do we know? (Symptoms)
 The main symptom is severe itching in the
affected areas, usually in the pubic hair region.
Itching may take between one and three weeks
to begin after you become infected.
 Itching is usually worse at night, when the lice
feed. It is due to a sensitivity to louse saliva.
 Itchy red 'bumps' on the skin, in the hair-
covered areas, may appear.
 Faint blue spots may appear on the skin. This
occurs where the lice have been feeding.
 Skin irritation and scratching may cause
redness or a rash in affected areas.
 You may develop eye inflammation if your
eyelashes are affected.
 You might notice really tiny dark brown specks
in your underwear or your skin
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
How do we know? (Symptoms)
 Mild fever
 Feeling run-down
 Irritability (Things
easily irritate you)
 the presence of lice
or small egg sacs,
(nits) in pubic hair
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
How do we get Infected ?
 Unprotected Sexual
intercourse with infected
partner
 Body contact with person
who is infected either
through kissing and
hugging
 Sharing of Clothes
beddings, towels and
other materials with
person(s) who is infected
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
So it is not only through sex, you might not
really be safe, even if you don’t indulge in such
escapades
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
Who can get infected?
Anybody including Children. The whole family can even
be infected.
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
You are getting really Scared
Aren’t You
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
Don’t Worry
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
It can be treated !!!
Treatment for Pubic Lice
 Wash the infested area; towel dry.
 Carefully follow the instructions
in the package or on the label.
Thoroughly saturate the pubic
hair and other infested areas with
lice medication. Leave
medication on hair for the time
recommended in the
instructions. After waiting the
recommended time, remove the
medication by following carefully
the instructions on the label or in
the box.
 Following treatment, most nits
will still be attached to hair
shafts. Nits may be removed with
fingernails or by using a fine-
toothed comb.
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
Treatment for Pubic Lice
 All sex partners from within the
previous month should be
informed that they are at risk for
infestation and should be treated.
 Avoid sexual contact with their
sex partner(s) until both they and
their partners have been
successfully treated and
reevaluated to rule out persistent
infestation.
 Repeat treatment in 9-10 days if
live lice are still found.
 Persons with pubic lice should be
evaluated for other sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs).
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
Treatment for Pubic Lice
 To kill any lice or nits
remaining on clothing, towels,
or bedding, machine-wash
and machine-dry those items
that the infested person used
during the 2-3 days before
treatment. Use hot water (at
least 130°F) and the hot dryer
cycle.
 Items that cannot be
laundered can be dry-cleaned
or stored in a sealed plastic
bag for 2 weeks.
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
Treatment for Pubic Lice
 All bedding, towels, and
clothing that may have
been exposed should be
thoroughly washed or
dry cleaned, and your
home should be
vacuumed.
 Put on clean underwear
and clothing after
treatment.
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
Treatment for Pubic Lice
 Pregnant women, breastfeeding
women, and infants must use
products specially designed for
them.
 Everyone who may have been
exposed to pubic lice should be
treated at the same time. That
way they can avoid becoming
infected again.
Ibiyemi Ademola Adedamola for MFM Grace and
Power Medical Crew
Drugs ?
 A lice-killing lotion
containing 1% permethrin
or a mousse containing
pyrethrins and piperonyl
butoxide can be used to
treat pubic ("crab") lice.
These products are
available over-the-
counter without a
prescription at a local
drug store or pharmacy.
These medications are safe
and effective when used
exactly according to the
instructions in the package
or on the label.
