The Fire Monitoring, Mapping, and Modeling System is an example of blending science with knowledge management to create knowledge that solves real problems. The FireM3 System - Acquires data from many different sources. - Spatially interpolates the data on a GIS platform. - Transforms the data into information in the form of maps. - Uses models to combine data layers to produce knowledge. - Adapts the knowledge to support real-world-decision making. FireM3 is a fourth-generation fire-management information system. It builds upon 30 years of evolution that began in the days when data was input with punched cards, computing was done on a main frame, and tables were sent out via teletype. I think you will agree that we have come a long way since then.
