3. The History
The 1st Oktoberfest was actually a horse race that was held on October
17th, 1810 in celebration of a royal wedding.
1881 Birth of the first chicken roaster.
In the 19th century the breweries opened huge festival tents with music.
Since 1950, the Oktoberfest has been opened each year with the words
“O’zapft is”.
Today, the Oktoberfest is the largest folk festival in the world with over
6 million visitors.
The Oktoberfest is opened on the first Saturday following September 15th
and traditionally it ends on the first Sunday in October.

The theft of a liter beer glass is punishable by law.
Each year a song is declared the “Wiesnhit” and the lyrics are available in
the beer tents.
Festivals similar to the Oktoberfest are held in countries around the world
(including China, Canada and Brazil).
The most frequently played song is “Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit” (A Toast
to Good Cheer) with the obligatory “Oans, zwoa – Gsuffa!” (One, two –
drink!)
World record for carrying 1 liter beer glasses: 23 full liter beer glasses for a
distance of 40 meters.
Albert Einstein worked as an apprentice for an electrician company at the
Oktoberfest.

In 2014, 1 liter of beer costs around € 9,50. 60 years ago it was a cheap
€ 0.87 and 40 years ago it only cost € 1.51.
The Hofbräuhaus has the largest tent with space for 10,000 people.
In 2011, an amazing 7.5 million liters of beer were served.
The legally permitted short pour (i.e. pouring less than a full glass) of 10
centiliters per liter glass of beer brings the tent owners an additional 5.4
million euros.

Lederhosen: Short, long or below the knee; modern or classic
Instead of a dirndl or lederhosen, you can for example also wear a pair of
dark jeans with a checkered blouse or shirt.
