How Effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? For this question we will do a breakdown of all the micro-aspects of the film, talking about Mise en Scene, Camera, Editing and Sound. All of these aspects combined make a successful home-made film, with all the hours of hard work, planning and dedication put together, the now end product is a fantastic achievement for our group ‘Fried Egg Films’ (Justin Mears and Alex Corcoran). Before we breakdown the film we would like to show the film. (SHOW FILM)
Firstly we will break down Mise en Scene, like all the other a very important micro-aspect of the film, without it you don’t have a realistic film and it’s hard for the audience to relate to the film like it should do. Mise en Scene is a huge area to cover and so we will firstly start off with the costume.Costume:The costume was a big role in our film, as the costume was what made the film realistic or not, as the film dates back to the 1950’s. We decided carefully about what people would wear in the 1950’s and decided that perhaps half a suit would be the most casual for back then but also the easiest to retain. We had the main character ‘Mikey‘ dress in black trousers, black shoes, a white shirt, a tie, braces with combed back hair, he is made to look well dressed and proper for the 1950’s.Then we have the Zombie, we decided to also have him in black trousers, black shoes and a shirt, as he would have been a normal person just like ‘Mikey‘ before being turned into a zombie. Then to make him seem dangerous we created an artificial bloody substance that mimics the real life blood which we then put onto the zombie and his shirt, we smeared a hand onto him as though somebody he may have eaten was struggling making for a more realistic and believable approach for the zombie. Then we have the extra character who is dressed in a stripy top and black trousers also, he is dressed differently to make him seem as though he will be the victim, and makes him stand out from the other characters.
For the setting of our film ‘Attack of the Zombie’ we have chosen a remote location, this adds to the creepiness particularly at the beginning when the Zombie is creeping through the long grass. (SHOW CLIP) The moving into the grass was chosen to look like the zombie was stalking the extra, this has worked well as this is what it looks like. The wooded location also has an element of dead to it, as the film was filmed in the winter, this is something that has gone right for our production as it gives the film a bit more of a ‘Horror’ effect.A number of Props were used in the making of the film, such as the baseball bat, we had chosen to use a baseball bat as this is what people expected to see in a Zombie film, this information was acquired when we did research into our film Genre of Horror Zombie. Also we had made fake blood in order to add blood when the bat hit the zombie, unfortunately it did not work to well and did not get onto camera. But we had used the blood to smear onto the zombie which made for a real life effect.
In ‘Attack Of the Zombie’ we have demonstrated a wide range of camera angles and techniques. Many shot have been well thought out through the planning process and we have been creative with the camera work, we use shots such as point of view as the zombie creeps through the grass and a close up of the extra’s face whilst running away, giving that all important fear shown in the face. We also believe it adds to the realism effect as the camera is shaky and makes for a real life filming sequence. We have also chosen to film the main character ‘Mikey‘ in low angle as he is the central protagonist of the film and ultimately the hero as he beats down on the zombie. (SHOW CLIP). We see that the character is in a low angle as he hits the zombie, this is to show the power status of the character which at that point is very high.
Editing has been huge in the making of ‘Attack of the Zombie’ Perhaps one of the most challenging tasks, the group have laboured many hours trying to get the editing up to tip top condition. We have used editing a lot in the creation of this film, as we had wanted to make the film look like an older 1950’s nuclear warning film. To create the feel of the 1950’s film we had put the film into black and white and put a grain onto it, it has come out perfect as we layered it on top of the film, although initially the grain was too small to notice, we had corrected this and made the grain look thicker and overall made the film much more enjoyable to view. We had also added in jump cuts throughout the film where the film would jump slightly forward, this has also made the film look like a 1950’s nuclear warning film. In the editing process of the film we have excelled putting in After effects, like when ‘Mikey‘ hits the zombie and the blood squirts out which looks really good and adds to the feel of the film. We had also made the zombie more significant through editing as the choppy editing making spectators pay special attention to the zombie. The editing has definitely been the most time consuming but also the most enjoyable micro-aspects of the film in terms of work.
Sound has also played a huge part in the coming together of the film, an essential part that we had done last, after planning filming and editing. The sound has probably been the most difficult micro-aspects to get perfect, with all the sounds put onto the film afterwards, non had been recorded during filming, we had the task of syncing the footsteps and the hitting of the bat just right, they were very small niggley bits but after all had been put together the end result was definitely worth recording the sound after filming. We had gone to an isolated wood near the filming location to record the background sound and also the footsteps and bat hitting. For the bat sounds we had found a waterlogged area where we hit the ground to make a squelching sound to mimic the sound of a head as best as possible, as a group we are glad to have recorded the sound afterwards and after syncing all the sound and film together we are relieved to have done the sound this way.
In the production of ‘Attack of the Zombie’ we used a variety of different media forms and conventions, we particularly used a variety of different computer software. Some software in particular were ‘Adobe Premier Pro CS3’, ‘Adobe Premier after Effects CS3’, ‘Adobe Photoshop CS3’ and we used an internet website www.blogger.com. Using mainly Adobe, we have learnt how to use this company programs extremely well, as a result a positive project was produced.
The ‘Adobe Premier Pro CS3’ program was probably used the most out of all the media programs we have used, this program was used in the editing process. It helped us edit the film as well as edit the sound and combine them both together. Adobe Premier Pro CS3 played a massive part in the creation of the film, and it was vital that Justin and Alex learnt how to use it well very fast. We did so and edited the film extremely well, although their are moments where the film is slightly out of sync, but all together this adds to the films effect as it is like the 1950’s film. Despite having a clean and nice finish the editing process wasn’t all smooth, as some files wouldn’t download and we came across a mountain of problems through out the editing stage.
‘Adobe Premier After Effects’ wasn’t used that much in the process of our film. The program is a very hard program to use and use well, but we decided to give it a go, and we believe the end result of the after effect is good. During filming we attempted to film blood squirting out of the zombie, unfortunately this was too hard to make visible on camera, so we took it upon our selves to create this effect on this program. The program took some time to work and function the way we planned to have it work, but we got there in the end and the end result has definitely improved because of this.
Photoshop was a small process in the making of our film, although we did use it in our film as well as the poster we created for the film. Our group are comfortable with using Photoshop and I believe the products that have come from Photoshop have been of a high standard. As you can see the poster in the presentation. In the film we had also used Photoshop for the beginning credits, this was to give the film an old styled film effect as we intended. We thought this worked out and has added to the ‘old’ effect of the film.
The blog has been used to store all our planning of the product, the final product and the evaluation of the product. We used www.blogger.com the website has been easy to use and easy to store our information on it. The blog has been a very handy portfolio considering this project has been a group effort, all group members were able to access the files, upload files and view files simply by logging onto the website. Blogger has been an interesting way of creating a portfolio but has definitely been a useful and reliable one
Our film “Attack of the zombies” has incorporated several different genres into film in order to create a unique take on the horror and comedy genre. Black comedy elements in recent films such as “Inglorious Basterds” and “Shaun Of The Dead” provided us with a basis of this genre as well as being able to incorporate elements of comedy violence and physicality.
The rules of vintage horror films such as Night Of The Living Dead carried a basic plot rather than fusing elements of comedy films for example “Zombieland”. As our film was to be based on horror we wanted to fuse as many genres as possible in order to create a unique style, what is seen in our film is a combination of educational 1950s film, black comedy and vintage horror. Our audience research gave us a sense of direction with what genres were most appealing and how props and costume were important to make up these genres, for instance the baseball bat.
The initial ideas for the film were influenced by older films which obeyed the rules of their genre. These films were ones such as Dawn Of The Dead and Night Of The Living Dead. We also took inspiration from films and research such as Inglorious Basterds, this allowed us to manipulate and fuse together these different genres. In order to achieve this we filtered the film to black and white reminiscent of early 1960s horror in order to achieve the same vibe as these films. Our research told us that Zombie, Horror and action films used specific weapons, angles and makeup. We acknowledged this research and incorporated this into our film by using heavy makeup and as many props and costumes as possible (insert screenshot of these items). Fusing these conventions together allowed us to also to make a hybrid genre based on these certain film genres.
In our film we have used as many inspirations from the horror, action and educational genre as possible.Firstly take into consideration the location, a slightly remote and open field reminiscent of films we were initially inspired by. As well as this the audience research told us that a wooded area and the streets were the most common type of locations expected to see in a Zombie film. Nevertheless we used this research as the primary location in order to meet the requirements of the focus group as well as being able to take inspiration from older horror films.Weaponry is also used in order to provide the real horror in zombie films, so we asked our focus group what type of weapons would you sue in a zombie film with the response mainly being objects such as everyday tools such as shovels and also a baseball bat.We were able to then fuse our audience research and inspiration from films such as Inglorious Basterds to incorporate it into our film.
We did not have a specific niche audience, so our film was open to criticism from a wide range of people. One concern with the audience feedback was that film wasn’t going to be understood for instance the fusion of different genres, but these were acknowledged in the film and contributed to it’s success. This open audience met our film positively and were able to identify the hybrid of different genres, most notably the 1950’s style educational film, as well as the vintage horror genre with comparisons being made to eerie 1960’s horror films we had researched and taken influence from such as Night Of The Living Dead. As well as a good response with regards to genre, editing techniques were also praised, for instance the grainy filter we had applied, the sound effects and lastly the effect the voiceover had on the film.
