My Official Hack slides from Dockercon 2016 as demonstrated in the community theatre in the expo area. In this hack, we secure the data-center through a scaleable network of real-time sensors and microservices running Docker. Each rack in the server-room is filled with thousands of terabytes of priceless customer data, IoT lets us keep one step ahead and keep that data safe. The cluster deploys a set of smart sensors running the Docker Swarm agent to the rack panels.

It’s almost exactly five years since I powered up my first Raspberry Pi - a baffling 12th birthday present! Dockerfiles are great. They provide a zero-barrier-to-entry format for describing a single Docker image which is immediately clear to anyone reading them. But with that simplicity comes problems that become apparent as your adoption of Docker gathers pace. * Dockerfiles can inherit from other docker images, but images are not Dockerfiles * Dockerfile provides no built-in mechanism for creating abstractions, so as usage grows identical or similar instructions can be duplicated across many files * The Docker APi exposes a build endpoint, but the API is very course, taking Dockerfile as the transport rather than exposing the individual instructions * Dockerfiles are just that, files. So they can come from anywhere The one layer per line in a Dockerfile limitation can lead to an explosion of layers, which fail to take advantage of the promised space and performance benefits.

Testing applications is important, as shows the rise of continuous integration and automated testing. In this talk, I will focus on one area of testing that is difficult to automate: poor network connectivity. Developers usually work within reliable networking conditions so they might not notice issues that arise in other networking conditions. I will give examples of software that would benefit from test scenarios with varying connectivity. I will explain how traffic control on Linux can help to simulate various network connectivity. Finally, I will run a demo showing how an application running in Kubernetes behaves when changing network parameters.

The Internet of things (IoT) requires a transition of many paradigms that are commonly used today. One of them is the shift from *scaling up*, i.e. from a system design towards bigger machines with higher computational power to *scaling down*, i.e. a system design based on tiny devices with small computational power. Heavy virtual machines and energy-hungry data center technology are not suited for sensor networks at the edge of the IoT. With the latest release of Docker (August 2016), there is an orchestration tool available that is energy-efficient and lightweight enough to handle heavy load on small, but many IoT devices. This is because Docker has now been made available on the ARM CPU architecture, which is already used in a large share of small devices available today because ARM is optimized for small scale and energy-efficient computing. Thus, with the new Docker ported to ARM, the power of container virtualization technology is now available for the IoT, thereby simplifying the development, deployment and operation of applications. In the mean time, Kubernetes, Google's production-ready orchestration tool, has also been ported to the ARM architecture and therefore is also available to run large sensor networks at little computational power. In this talk I present the results of a research project that evaluated the high availability performance of Kubernetes and Docker in an IoT-like environment: A multi-node Raspberry Pi cluster. How can a company that is over a century old transform itself to thrive in a digital economy? For GE, responding to change is part of its modus operandi. This is a company that has famously made change a core capability and a constant in its history. For over 120 years, GE has ploughed forward under a banner of “Building, powering, moving and curing the world. Not just imagining. Doing.” This constant focus on innovation and transformation has made the company the only one to still remain in the Dow Jones Industrial Index since the original index was established in 1896. GE is betting big on software and analytics to bring about its transformation, with Jeff Immelt stating: “I took over an industrial company, now it will be known as an analytics company”. GE’s focus on data analytics was clear back in 2012 when it set aside up to $1.5 billion for small take-overs to boost its presence in analytics. GE currently monitors and analyzes 50 million data elements from 10 million sensors on $1 trillion of managed assets daily to move customers toward zero unplanned downtime. GE’s digital transformation is not the result of being in the right place at the right time. Instead, it is the result of a structured approach that involved a strong top-down digital vision, capability development, achieving all-round buy-in and a constant focus on innovation. While many digital natives, from FaceBook to Uber, continue to take much of the limelight, this 120-year-old giant of the corporate world shows that digital agility is not just confined to the new Millennial corporates.

Presentation at the IBM InterConnect Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 24, 2016. Mobile games are the fastest-growing sector of the $70 billion video game industry, far outpacing traditional consoles. But companies that aspire to create the next hot title have to account for more than just the app downloaded to a user device. They must prepare for huge spikes in game play with scalable backends to handle massive data and transactions behind socially linked user profiles and global leaderboards. This talk looks at how IBM successfully partnered with Firemonkeys, a major studio that had hit their vertical scaling limit, to design and deploy a new Docker-based architecture on SoftLayer. This scale-out architecture is able to handle an order of magnitude more customers for their next major release.

In two years, Docker hit the sweet spot for devs and ops, with tools for building, shipping, and running distributed apps architected as a set of collaborating microservices packaged as Linux containers. One area of the Docker ecosystem that saw a lot of innovation in the past year is container orchestration systems. This session compares and contrasts various Docker orchestration systems (Swarm, Machine, and Compose), the batteries included with Docker itself, Mesos, Kubernetes, CoreOS/Fleet, Deis, Cloud Foundry, and Tutum. It includes a demo of how to deploy a Java 8 app with MongoDB on several of these systems. The goal of the session is to give you a framework to help evaluate how these systems can meet your particular requirements.
