Alexa McCorkle Recommendation for US Bank MAXX Leadership Scholarship
1. 28 February, 2014
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request that you consider Alexa McCorkle for the US Bank MAXX Leadership Scholarship.
I met Alexa through our mutual participation in the Central Washington University Cycling Club, which
she joined shortly after enrolling at CWU. Over the past two years, Alexa has been an asset to the club
as both a talented athlete and gifted leader and it is my pleasure to recommend her for this scholarship.
Alexa has shown remarkable initiative by recruiting female cyclists to our club. Since joining the cycling
club in the fall of 2012, Alexa has recruited four new members to our team and we currently have the
most female athletes since the club’s inception. Under her leadership we now have a strong women’s
team who represent CWU in the community and at races throughout the Northwest. Even before taking
on her current role as club president, Alexa took these new athletes under her wing, serving as a mentor
and role model. More significantly, her actions have had positive impacts on a larger sale because she
has nurtured the love of the sport among females, who are underrepresented in cycling. As you are
likely aware, Alexa plans to pursue a career as a commercial airline pilot upon completion of her aviation
degree at CWU. I am confident that she will play an active role in the advancement of women in
aviation, who are similarly underrepresented in the professional world.
Alexa has also been planning the Wildcat Omnium Invitational Race, a multi-day bicycle race hosted by
the CWU Cycling Club and scheduled to take place in mid-March. The Wildcat Omnium is the most
centrally located race in the Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference, drawing over 100 athletes to
Ellensburg from schools in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia. This race serves
as the primary source of funding for our club. Funds generated by this race go to purchase new team
kits, recruit new riders, and bring student athletes from CWU to races throughout the Northwest. Alexa
is at the center of the planning process, handling logistics, delegating tasks, and communicating with the
university, local businesses, community members, and member schools. Alexa has taken on a major
role in planning this event over the past six months, showing that she is capable of seeing complex, long-
term projects through from start to finish. Alexa has performed every task admirably and overcomes
roadblocks efficiently. I have every confidence that the race weekend will be a success. Furthermore,
her dedication to this task comes not from a sense of obligation as club president, but rather from a
genuine enthusiasm for the sport and desire to promote it in our region.
The 2014 cycling season will be my last as a collegiate athlete, but I will leave having benefitted from
Alexa’s leadership and knowing that the club has a bright future with her at the helm. Based on her
numerous positive contributions to the CWU Cycling Club, I believe that Alexa makes an excellent
candidate for this scholarship.
Sincerely,
Ayla Aymond
