1. How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
texts?
2. How do the individual products relate to each other?
Discs Poster Digipak
The discs, poster and the Digipak all relate to each in that they pertain Music Video
the same triangular image predominately seen on the Digipak. This
relates all the products together so they are tied into just one album,
similar to the way Pink Floyd used the same image from “Dark Side Of
The Moon” in all other media products relating to the album.
The Digipak and the music video relate to each other as they include
the band as seen in the images, of course. Also, the band is placed in
the same positions in the video as they stand in the pictures, albeit
without the same clothing. This reinforces the band’s image.
The fonts used all relate to each other as they are the same,
Haettenschweiler font, throughout. This, from research, is the font
that TDCC use and not only in one album, but throughout all their The iconic album art from
works. So not only do each of the individual parts of our media Dark Side Of The Moon.
product relate to each other, they also conform to the conventions
TDCC created.
3. How do they sell the album?
Since they all relate to each other, as has been said, they help sell the album because the image is repeated
throughout media, whether you’re walking through town and see the poster or you go into a music shop and see the
album the same image is used relentlessly. Thus selling the album because it creates something larger than the
album and people will remember the image, and hopefully buy the album. Such as the iconic Rolling Stones image of
lips that has been used in the music culture for years and has sold many, many Rolling Stones merchandise.
The products are consistent with the themes it portrays, of an indie band promoting their music. The video promotes
their music as they play their instruments and the Digipak, discs and poster promote the band as it shows they have
a deeper meaning with the images used. These altogether promote the band as they show they have deep meanings
and musical talent. People who appreciate talented musicians and intriguing art therefore will be likely to buy the
album, and that’s how consistency helps sell the album.
4. How do the different products reinforce the band’s/performer’s image?
By using the same triangular design it reinforces the same image, repeating it until promotes the band. If the same image
is attributed with a band again and again then this image will reinforce their image and therefore it promotes them as a
band and as a media product.
Both the Digipak and the music video use the same band, thus reinforcing the image and style of the band themselves as
it’s repeated across different media platforms.
The band’s main image that they are trying to present is that of talented and creative musicians, the different products
help achieve this by, with the triangular design, promoting them as creative people and with the music video and Digipak
as musicians. The DIY ethic of the video also helps reinforce this creative aspect of the band.
If we look at the band’s use of originality as an image they’d want to promote (Which it would be) we can conclude that all
the media products reinforce this; how the music video is shot by them and a group of friends; the Digipak’s original
design and layout and the poster’s enigmatic look which utilizes said Digipak design. All the products work together to
promote this image, it makes the image of originality stronger as they all combine with each other.
