2. TODAY
1. Check in
2. Tumblr Reminder
3. Second Life– let’s look around
4. Team time
5. Homework
3. Each week, you are to make two Tumblr posts:
1) A reading response: this should be an approximately 500-750
word response to ONE of the readings from the week (your
choice) in which you engage the reading but also share your
response/thoughts. This should not be a summary; you should be
engaging with the reading the way you might if you were making
a comment in class.
2) “So, this is cool”: every week I’d like you to share a link to
something you think is interesting related to gaming and game
design. It can be an article, a picture, you can tell a story… it
should just be interesting and on-point for class. Both of these
posts are due at 11:59 pm on Saturday each week.
If you’ve forgotten any of your posts, you can have a one time
mulligan because I’m cool like that. Have them caught up by
11:59 PM Sunday night. You should have 8 posts.
4. Second Life
Since Second Life is a little different compared to
the “hit it and go” games we’ve played so far, I
wanted to get started with it in class this week.
So… boldly go to your Applications and look for
a green hand that looks like this:
6. 1. Second Life can
be a little slow. Be
patient. Don’t run
other stuff at
first.
7. 2. Second Life can,
at times, be a
little raunchy. Be
ready for that.
8. 3. Second Life is a
sandbox, but it’s
sort of a less-than-
intuitive sandbox.
Be ready to go read
as you try stuff.
9. 4. I want you to
make something
“gameish” inside
this environment. Be
creative.
10. 5. Remember that
other people can do
whatever they want;
don’t be surprised
if you meet a jerk.
Or Ten jerks.
11. And now…
… I want to combine the two things I wanted us
to do today into what I hope will be an
interesting stew.
I want you to have some time to brainstorm
WITH your team, but I also want you to get to
know Second Life a little. So I want you to
brainstorm while IN Second Life. You can talk
out loud too, but try to use the “game” to help
you with ideas.
12. Remember:
Your game design documents are due a week
from today.
Make sure to bring them to class in some format
that can:
1. Be shared with classmates
2. Leave with me
13. For Tuesday
Read for class:
The three posts linked from The
Psychology of Video Games (on the
schedule page).
These are meant to be “teasers” to get
us thinking. We’ll discuss these topics
on Tuesday.
