How hollywood got camping
1. How Hollywood Got Camping All Wrong
When a person mentions summer camp, often we end up thinking back to the movies we’ve watched
over the years. With everything from Friday the 13th to Camp Rock, it can be hard to separate camp fact
from camp fiction. But a kids camp can be safer and a far more exciting than the stereotypical camping
experiences you’ve seen on the big screen.
Psychotic Killers Don’t Haunt the Campgrounds
As a general rule, undead serial killers don’t haunt campgrounds. While you will need to be aware of
your surroundings, the last thing you will need to worry about is a monster in a hockey mask,
mythological creature or other danger shooting out while you are visiting.
It Doesn’t Rain All Summer at Camp
In many films that focus on a kids camp setting, the inevitable rain scene occurs. While there is a chance
there will be occasional rain storms during the summer, the chances of them lasting for days on end are
slim to none. This is a case where you should be prepared for the occasional storm, while leaving the ark
at home.
2. 50 Million Bugs Looking to Pounce
Hollywood seems to be fascinated with nature being filled with mosquitoes, spiders and a slew of other
bugs that are waiting for campers to set foot in their territory. While it is true that the occasional bug
will probably show up while you are out in the woods, they aren’t going to be in massive swarms and for
the most part, they will likely leave you alone.
Camp Will Be an Endless Party
While some movies have made the camping experience out to be a place for sex, drugs and alcohol, that
couldn’t be further from the truth. Most campers find that none of these experiences occur and if
something is found, counselors are quick to take action to ensure everyone has a safe camping
experience.
Summer Camp Will Be Boring and Rundown
A theme that many movies have is the camp falling apart and staff that could care less about dealing
with campers. In most cases though, the camps are well maintained and staff is trained to be caring and
3. attentive. Their focus is on their group of campers who will be provided with a positive and uplifting
experience.
While changing the perception Hollywood has of the great outdoors will never change, if it can sell a few
tickets, campers and their families can benefit from getting a better understanding of the experience
that they will be experiencing. In most cases, it will be a peaceful and laid back experience that is full of
fresh air, sunshine and fun that will give you memories that you can appreciate for a lifetime.
