A devastating fire broke out at the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata on December 9th, 2011. The fire started in the basement around 2:15 AM and spread smoke through the AC ducts. Fire brigades were called at 4:10 AM but rescue efforts did not begin until 4:30 AM. Many patients died from smoke inhalation before they could be evacuated from the building. An investigation later found safety violations at the hospital including inactive fire alarms and sprinklers, lack of staff training, and unsafe storage of flammable materials in the basement.
