2. Researchers say gay characters either invisible or represented in derogatory or
demeaning manner by majority of programmes.
Soaps and reality shows such as Hollyoaks, I'm a Celebrity …, How to Look
Good Naked and Emmerdale gave most screen time to gay, lesbian and
bisexual characters or issues, but they were almost invisible in talent shows
and dramas.
In a 2009 YouGov poll of secondary school teachers, 71% said that anti-gay
language in broadcasts affected homophobic bullying. Three in five said they
regularly witnessed anti-gay bullying.
3. In many forms of popular entertainment, gays are portrayed as overly
promiscuous, flashy and incredibly bold.
In 1997, when American comedian Ellen DeGeneres came out of the closet
on her popular sitcom, many sponsors, such as the Wendy's fast food chain,
pulled their advertising.
Despite the stereotypical depictions of gays, the media has at times promoted
acceptance of gays with television shows such as Will and Grace and Queer Eye.
This increased publicity reflects the coming-out movement of the LGBT
community. As more celebrities come out, more gay-friendly shows develop,
such as the 2004 show The L Word.
4. In more recent times there are many films and TV shows in which gays are
portrayed.
In Clueless (1995) Christian (Justin Walker), a handsome classmate with great
fashion sense who turns out to be gay. Cher naively and repeatedly fails to
recognize Christian's homosexual tendencies, and tries unsuccessfully to
seduce him while they are alone one night watching Spartacus.
Skins (Season 5) A character Franky Fitzgerald, a timid androgynous teenager
who has recently moved to Bristol from Oxford, along with her adoptive
fathers, Geoff and Jeff, preparing for school. They’re shown as supportive and
kind.
(Season 1&2) Maxxie Oliver is portrayed as proficient at several styles of
dance, including tap dance. He is also shown as being a brilliant artist,
seductive, well-liked and well-adjusted.
5. Kick Ass (2010) After being beaten up, his effort to conceal the truth,
claiming he had had his clothes thrown off after being mugged, leads to
rumours that he is gay. His long-time crush, Katie Deauxma immediately
attempts to become his friend, having always wanted a "gay BFF“
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (2007) The film's depiction of same-
sex marriage in New York preceded the 2011 enactment of the Marriage
Equality Act, which legalized marriage for same-sex couples in the state.
Milk (2008) The story of Harvey Milk, and his struggles as an American gay
activist who fought for gay rights and became California's first openly gay
elected official.
The Kids Are Alright (2010) Nic and Jules are a married lesbian couple living
in California. They have each given birth to a child using the same sperm
donor. Etc
6. Many famous actors have come out and done a lot to improve how gays are represented.
