5. Poetry
The first poetry written in what is now the Czech Republic dates
back to the 9th century, when manuscripts containing hymns
and devotional poems began to appear across Eastern Europe.
This early Czech poetry was written in Old Church Slavic.
6. The first poems composed strictly in Czech, the Legends of King
Wenceslas and Hospodine, pomiluj ny (Lord Have Mercy On Us),
both date back to the 10th century.
By the 13th and 14th centuries, Czech had become an accepted
language for literature. Most popular poems were legends,
epics, historical chronicles, theological tracts, biographies of
saints (known as hagiography), and romances.

Falling Through Our Eyes
Mid winter, cold, damned cold
The kind of cold that freezes thought
and mine were ready
But she was warm and pretty, with good legs,
her smile catching me by surprise
Warm hands, warm touch, warm finger
splaying across my back
Her head so quickly on my shoulder
Sometimes love just comes like that
An unexpected meeting of the eyes
But does it ever last?
The sudden rush of passion
that makes me think I’m cared about
8. Or is it bound to lessen, as we know
much more and care much less?
Her body’s warm and nestles against mine.
Waking, tangled in the morning light,
we tease each other, reach across the sheets
She stretches, each line so finely drawn
We fall through one another’s eyes
Six months since we met, first held each other
A love that seems to deepen every day
I know I’ll hold her years from now,
with memories of each intimacy shared
This love, this Golden City, Prague
9. Mirrored
Reflections of my worth
can’t be found in your eyes,
nor yours in mine
Drawn in lines and shades
of subtlety
There’s danger there,
to find my value in your gaze
Charges it with everything I am,
hope to be, or ever were
If you look away, I’m ravaged
My love, my worth, is known to me
Endless study of the best and
worst,
a feel for the topography
Look elsewhere if you must
I’ll find myself, a mirrored image
