GUEST LECTURES
Over the years I have done innumerable guest lectures about my own work as well as talks about
contemporary Toronto art, lesbian & gay issues in contemporary art, and the cultural response to
the AIDS epidemic. The universities and colleges that I have given lectures at include University
of Lethbridge (2004, 1999) Memorial University, St. John's (1989,2001), Concordia University,
Montréal (1984, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000), University of Toronto, (1994,95 98, 99 2000) Ontario
College of Art and Design (198, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96,99,2000,2001, 2004),
University of Guelph (1992,2000), University of Manitoba (1997), University of Saskatchewan
(1984), Alberta College of Art and Design (1986,1993), Emily Carr College of Art and Design
(1985,1991, 1993), Simon Fraser University (1991), University of British Columbia (1991). Most
of these lectures included studio visits with students or community artists.
Most notably I was the Canada Council Visiting Artist to Vancouver in 1991, which
entailed lectures at all three institutions having Fine Arts programs (Emily Carr School of Art and
Design, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia) as well as a well-publicized
lecture at the Western Front for the general public. At each school I did critiques with post-
graduate and graduating students. In 1992, Michael Balser and I did a residency at Video Inn,
showing our tapes and discussing our issues and formal concerns. We also met with young
artists in the video community and viewed and discussed their work.
Often I have been invited to schools when there is a perceived shortcoming on staff. For
example, I spent a week at ECSAD, Vancouver, in 1985 because there was abundance of
students working in new figurative painting and few instructors with such a background. Similarly,
instructors have brought me to University of Western Ontario, Concordia, and OCAD to address
Queer issues in the visual arts. In 1994 students in the Printmaking Department of OCAD
organized to bring me in for a weeklong residency.
Most recently, I lectured Michel Daigneault’s second-year Figurative Course in 2014 and
Jon Baturin’s class at York University in 2011. I was artist-in-residence in the printmaking
program at Sheridan in 2014 (in Lisa Neighbor’s class) and delivered a lecture on my work
over the course of the term
