There’s never been a more critical need to better understand the impact of research efforts. The challenging state of funding models (1) and an enhanced pressure on young investigators to stand out from the crowd magnify this need as well as the perceived value of locally based impact services. These services are leveraged by a diverse range of stakeholders, from individuals to university-level decision makers and strategists. Individuals often wish to better demonstrate impact of published works to promotion committees or describe the impact of research studies to funding agencies when applying for funding or complying with institution-level or federal reporting exercises. Research groups, departments, and institutions often wish to discover how research findings are being used to promote science and gain a better overall view of research publications and outputs. Libraries are particularly well poised to meet the need to understand a more nuanced view of impact. Libraries are trusted, neutral parties with a tradition of service and support and often act as technology hubs on campus with IT and data expertise. Librarians are trained information professionals with information and searching skills and a keen understanding of the research, education, clinical landscape of their institution. This presentation will discuss general trends in the field, including an overview of resources, assessment frameworks and tools; strategies for partnering with stakeholders; and examples of library based service models, from basic services to highly integrated library-based core research units. David De Roure's Inaugural Lecture on 28th October at Oxford e-Research Centre, University of Oxford, UK 10 years ago we saw a few early adopters of e-Science technology; now we see acceleration of research through broader adoption and sharing of tools, techniques and artefacts, both for 'big science' and the 'long tail scientist'. Will this incremental trend continue or are we seeing glimpses of a phase change ahead, where researchers harness these emerging digital capabilities to address research questions in ways that simply were not possible before? This talk will describe three generations of e-Research, using the myExperiment social website as a lens to glimpse future research practice, and focusing on a web-scale computational musicology project as an illustration of 3rd generation thinking. Citizen science can broadly be defined as the involvement of volunteers in science. Over the past decade there has been a rapid increase in the number of citizen science initiatives. The breadth of environmental-based citizen science is immense. Citizen scientists have surveyed for and monitored a broad range of taxa, and also contributed data on weather and habitats reflecting an increase in engagement with a diverse range of observational science. Citizen science has taken many varied approaches from citizen-led (co-created) projects with local community groups to, more commonly, scientist-led mass participation initiatives that are open to all sectors of society. Citizen science provides an indispensable means of combining environmental research with environmental education and wildlife recording. Here we provide a synthesis of extant citizen science projects using a novel cross-cutting approach to objectively assess understanding of citizen science and environmental monitoring including: 1. Brief overview of knowledge on the motivations of volunteers. 2. Semi-systematic review of environmental citizen science projects in order to understand the variety of extant citizen science projects. 3. Collation of detailed case studies on a selection of projects to complement the semi-systematic review. 4. Structured interviews with users of citizen science and environmental monitoring data focussing on policy, in order to more fully understand how citizen science can fit into policy needs. 5. Review of technology in citizen science and an exploration of future opportunities.

While purchasing models may in some ways mirror more traditional forms of electronic information, there are many unique considerations in the collection and acquisition of datasets. Collaboration is ubiquitous in today’s science, yet there is limited support for coordinating scientific work. The general-purpose tools that are typically used (e.g., email, shared document editing, social coding sites), have still not replaced inperson meetings, phone calls, and extensive emails needed to coordinate and track collaborative activities. Scientists with diverse knowledge and skills around the globe could collaborate by opening scientific processes that expose all tasks and activities publicly to achieve a shared scientific question. This paper describes the Organic Data Science framework to support scientific collaborations that revolve around complex science questions that require significant coordination, entice contributors to remain engaged for extended periods of time, and enable continuous growth to accommodate new contributors as the work evolves over time. We discuss how the design of this framework incorporates principles followed by successful on-line communities. We present initial results to date of several communities that are collaborating using this framework.

This is a presentation from the citizen science impact event at the Open University http://www.open.ac.uk/blogs/opentel/citizen-science-impact-event-at-the-open-university/ Citizen science offer different levels of engagement to participants, which have been captured in typologies of the field (contributory, collaborative, co-created, collegial / crowdsourcing, distributed intelligence, participatory science, extreme citizen science). These typologies do no explicitly examine learning. At the same time, projects and activities striving to fulfil multiple goals (excellent scientific output, satisfying engagement, good recruitment, learning …). Within ythe range of citizen science project, we can consider different aspects of learning that are occurring in them, Projects and use examples from a range of project, and raise some aspects that can help those who are designing co-created projects.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
