Dealing with Squirrels
The California Ground Squirrel is a common site in many parts of the west coast. They can be
identified by their brownish grey fur and long, fluffy tail. Squirrels typically inhabit fields and
wooded areas, but they sometimes make their way into a person’s home.¹ When this happens,
they may become a nuisance due to noise, or the risk of fire. However there are many humane
ways to encourage squirrels to leave.²
Some of the most common problems with squirrels occur around the attic, chimney, birdfeeder,
house, yard, and garden.
Attic – Squirrels like to break into attics, especially female squirrels looking for a place
to nest. Usually, they make their way through a vent or a loose board. Attic dwelling
squirrels can make a lot of noise running around or scratching on the walls. Additionally
there is a risk of fire when they chew on wires. You may be able to encourage them to
leave simply by making a lot of noise. Do not attempt to relocate a family of squirrels by
yourself, or you may do more harm than good, especially if the young get separated from
their parents.
Chimney – Another way squirrels commonly get in the house is through the chimney.
Sometimes the squirrel will get trapped inside. If you can hear a squirrel scrambling
around inside your chimney, it may be stuck. That is why you should never attempt to
smoke the squirrel out. Try making some loud noises to see if the squirrel can leave on its
own. Another option is to lower a rope into the flue to see if it will climb out. Otherwise
you may be able to bait a humane live trap with some peanut butter and place it in the
fireplace. Then, set the squirrel free outside.
Birdfeeders – Squirrels eating from birdfeeders is a common complaint. They are
especially prone to do this in the summer when there is less food for them to eat in their
natural environment. If you are tired of squirrels robbing your birdfeeder, try moving it to
a new location. The ideal spot would be a pole that is over eight feet tall and far away
from any trees or buildings.³ You can equip the birdfeeder with a large plastic dome
called a baffle that is intended to keep out squirrels.
Garden – Squirrels in the garden can be particularly annoying when they are rooting up
your bulbs and nibbling on your fresh vegetables. Gardeners have suggested a host of
tricks intended to keep pesky squirrels out of the garden. Some swear by burying citrus
rinds just under the surface of the soil. Another idea is to sprinkle scary smells around the
yard, such as blood meal, or human and dog hair. If you turn on the sprinklers, it will
likely frighten off any squirrels currently in the garden. However you should not trap and
relocate the squirrels because more will take their place.
House – If there is a squirrel loose in the house, remain calm. First, make sure there are
no cats or dogs in the room. Close the inside doors to block off additional exits, then open
the windows or the front door. If the squirrel is unable to make its way outside, you can
fashion a humane trap with a heavy blanket. Surprise the animal from behind and wrap it
up in the blanket before setting it free outdoors. But be sure to wear protective gloves in
case it bites you out of fear.
If squirrels in the home have become a problem, never attempt to trap and release them yourself.
You could separate the squirrel from its babies, especially in spring or fall. It is better to consult
with a trained professional that specializes in wildlife removal. They will be able to locate the
place where the squirrels are getting inside and block it from further use.
