Quantifiers = words that tell us how
much or how many of something.
These quantifiers can be used only
with count nouns:
Quantifier Example
One One store is open.
Each Each coin is valuable.
Every Every bank is closed.
Note that each and every take the singular verb, even though
Each coin is valuable = All (the) coins are valuable.
Every bank is closed = All the banks are closed.
These quantifiers can be used only
with count nouns:
Quantifier Example
Two Two stores are open.
Both Both stores are nearby.
Both (of the) stores are nearby.
A couple of She bought a couple of gifts.
Several She bought several gifts.
These quantifiers can be used only
with count nouns:
Quantifier Example
Few They have few investments.
A few She has a few investments.
Many Does he own many buildings?
A great many He owns a great many buildings.
A number of He owns a number of buildings.
Note:
Few and a few are different in
meaning!
Few emphasizes not very many.
A few has a positive meaning,
emphasizing some.
For example:
Few people like to go to the
dentist= Not very many people like
to go to the dentist.
I have a few minutes before class,
so I can help you.
Note:
Many is used in questions and negative
statements:
How many children do you have?
I don’t know many people in my
neighborhood.
For an affirmative statement, we
use a lot of and not many:
She has a lot of new clothes.
**She has many new clothes.
These quantifiers can be used only
with non-count nouns:
Quantifier Example
Little They have little money.
A little She has a little money.
Much Does he have much property?
A great deal of He owns a great deal of
property.
Note:
Little and a little are different in
meaning!
Little emphasizes not very much.
A little has a positive meaning,
emphasizing some.
For example:
They have little money = They don’t
have very much money.
She has a little money = She has
some money (so she can buy some
new clothes).
Note:
Much is used in questions and negative
statements:
Does he have much property?
I’m both working and going to school,
so I don’t have much free time.
For an affirmative statement, we
use a lot of and not much:
Line dancing is a lot of fun.
**Line dancing is much fun.
These quantifiers can be used with both
non-count and plural count nouns:
