Antony Williams is the Vice President of Strategic Development for ChemSpider at the Royal Society of Chemistry. ChemSpider is one of the world’s primary online resources serving the chemistry community. Antony has a PhD in Chemistry specializing in NMR spectroscopy and has worked in a government laboratory, in academia, for a Fortune 500 company (Eastman Kodak), for a small start-up organization and has started two of his own companies prior to joining the Royal Society of Chemistry. During his career path he has experienced multiple work cultures. Antony will provide a short overview of his career path and discuss the various decisions that helped motivate his change in career from professional spectroscopist to website host and innovator to working for one of the world’s foremost scientific societies.

These slides describe my efforts to change engineering education. By focusing on group projects and presentations and real-world engineering issues that are applicable to much of industry, we can help students develop and demonstrate real-world skills. Industry will notice well done analysis of real-world issues and this has occurred in my two classes. The next steps are to work more closely with industry, focus more engineering classes on group projects and presentations, and to create new forms of resumes and transcripts. These resumes and transcripts should promote the students through linked presentations that demonstrate the real-world capabilities of students and that help engineering departments build brand images.

Mobile hardware and software technology continues to evolve very rapidly and presents drug discovery scientists with new platforms for accessing data and performing data analysis. Smartphones and tablet computers can now be used to perform many of the operations previously addressed by laptops or desktop computers. Although the smaller screen sizes and requirements for touch screen manipulation can present user interface design challenges, especially with chemistry related applications, these limitations are driving innovative solutions. We will present an introduction to some of the mobile apps we have been involved with most closely. One example is the Green Solvents app which utilizes data created by the ACS Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical roundtable. We will also describe a wiki to capture information about scientific mobile apps (www.scimobileapps.com) and provide our perspective on what mobile platforms may provide the drug discovery scientist in the future as this disruptive technology takes off.

With an intention to provide a high quality free internet resource of chemistry related data for the community, ChemSpider has aggregated almost 25 million compounds linked out to over 400 data sources and provided a platform for the community to both deposit and curate data. This experiment in crowdsourcing for chemistry has now been running for over three years. This presentation will review a number of aspects of the project including (a) the level of community participation in depositing and curating data; (b) the nature of data and content supplied by the community; (c) how ChemSpider is used by the community; (d) using game-based systems to assist in data curation; (e) algorithmic-based approaches to data validation and filtering; and (f) sharing data curation efforts with other online databases.

With the flourishing environment of platforms for sharing data, establishing an online profile and engaging in scientific discourse through alternative modes of publishing and participation, there are numerous potential benefits. However, while many scientists invest significant amounts of time in sharing their activities and opinions with friends and family the majority do not make use of the new opportunities to participate in the developing social web of science, despite the potential impact and influence on future careers. We now have many new ways to contribute to science outside of the classical publishing model. These include the ability to annotate and curate data, to “publish” in new ways on blogs and micropublishing sites, and many of these activities can be as part of a growing crowdsourcing network. Our efforts in this area are already being indexed and exposed on the internet via our publications, presentations and data and increasingly we are being quantified. This presentation will provide an overview of the various types of networking and collaborative sites available to scientists and ways to expose their scientific activities online. Many of these can ultimately contribute to the developing metrics of a scientist as identified in the new world of alternative metrics. Participation offers a great opportunity to develop a scientific profile within the community and may ultimately be very beneficial, especially to scientists early in their career.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies.
