Feedback from Thursday 17 March Principals’ Forum
Another successful Principals’ Forum took place on Thursday 17 March from 12.30-3pm at
Hackney Community College. The Forum covered two main topics: Developing a Community
Scorecard for London and ESOL. For the first topic, Maggie Galliers, Principal of Leicester
College, talked about her College’s experience in developing a Community Scorecard. AoC
Create are working with the LDA to develop the idea of a Community Scorecard for London.
The outcomes of this project will be circulated in the near future.
For the second topic, Julian Gravatt shared an update on ESOL and funding allocations for
London Colleges. The meeting, which included Heads of ESOL as well as Principals, discussed
how London Colleges should respond to the funding changes. In addition, AoC National are
hosting an ESOL Summit today, on Friday 25 March 2011. Principals and Heads of ESOL were
invited to attend. Further information will be circulated after the meeting.
If you require copies of the presentations by Maggie or Julian please contact the office.

Feedback from AoC London Region Marketing Committee meeting
For those of you who don’t know the Marketing Committee is sub-committee of the AoC
London Regional Committee, which meets regularly throughout the year to discuss priorities
for marketing London Colleges. The Committee met on Wednesday 23 March and confirmed
that the next Marketing Managers’ Network meeting will be on Wednesday 25 May 2011 as a
half day morning event. The theme for this event will be: “How to get your message out for
free” and the AoC London team are currently seeking and booking speakers for this event,
more information will be sent out shortly. If you are a Marketing Manager and you would like
to attend this event and join the network please contact the AoC London team.

At the meeting on Wednesday the Committee also discussed the London Colleges website and
it’s current re-vamp, which will be launched prior to the Marketing Managers’ network
meeting in May. The Marketing Committee also received a WorldSkills update from Val
Chiesa, AoC WorldSkills Project Director, a full update can be read in the section below.

WorldSkills London 2011
Update on London Colleges’ Involvement in WorldSkills London 2011

Showcasing
London Colleges have responded magnificently to the call for showcasing activities to support
the event and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies on 4 and 9 October. Rachel Malic, the
WSL2011 Events Manager for Showcasing, is delighted. ‘Two days before the closing date, we
had had a very disappointing response, but then the floodgates opened and we now have 182
completed applications for the panels to consider. 41 of these are from London, so many thanks
for all your enthusiasm and support.’
A London showcasing panel will review all the applications and the successful ones will be
submitted to the national panel chaired by Rob Wye from LSIS on 21 April. Organisations will
be notified in early May if they have been chosen to showcase.

Other Opportunities at the Event
‘Have a Go’ : the closing date to apply to run one of the ‘Have a Go’ areas at the Event is 31
March. These are being offered in each of the 46 skills areas by a variety of organisations,
including colleges. If you think your college could provide one of these, please contact Fran
Hubbard to find out more about it: fhubbard@worldskillslondon2011.com

Exhibition Space: following on from the information given in the last bulletin about costs for
exhibiting (from £3285 + VAT for 4 days), the AoC London Marketing Committee discussed
how London Colleges might take a joint approach to exhibiting. 150,000 visitors are expected
over the four days, so this is an ideal opportunity to promote your college offer. The National
Apprenticeships Service, together with Information and Advice services, will also be talking to
visitors and encouraging them to find out about training opportunities.
If you are interested in exhibiting with other colleges, please contact AoC London Region. For
more detailed information about costs or space available at ExCel, please contact Simon, Alice
or Jen from Prospects on 01823 362800.

Volunteering: Julia Bowditch is leading on volunteering for WSL2011. There is a range of
volunteering activity for both staff and students that can offer different types of work
experience over the period 5-8 October. Applications should be made by the end of April and
there is information available on: worldskillslondon2011.com/volunteer

AoC London Region Members’ Bulletin, 11 March 2011

Workshop Supervisors: we put out a call to college staff in the last bulletin to supervise at the
Competition. There has been some response to this but there are still gaps in the following
areas:
         Creative Modelling
         Offset Printing
         Car Painting
         CNC Milling
If you are interested and think this might contribute to your personal and professional
development (as well as giving you experience of competitions at the highest international
level) please contact Andy Murfitt at WSL2011 for an application pack and Technical
Description. (AMurfitt@worldskillslondon2011.com or 0207 429 2818).

Have a Go: in your college outside the event
‘Have a Go’ activities should give people a bite-size taster of a new skill, trade or profession to
inspire them to learn and enrol on courses or take up an Apprenticeship. Why not badge
activities you have planned for recruitment or parents’ evenings with the WorldSkills logo to
link it to the Event? These can be in any skills area relevant to the courses you offer, not just
those covered by skills competitions. Information about resources and a pack are available on:
www.worldskillslondon2011.com/haveago

The Skills Funding Agency will be supporting these local activities with some additional
funding. We will include details about this funding and how to access it as soon as they are
available. In the meantime, start thinking about how your college might link into the ‘Have a
Go’ campaign.

Evaluation of the functional skills pilot summative report
We are very pleased to be able to inform you that the summative report from the functional
skills pilot has been approved by ministers for publication. The report presents an interesting
and informative account of the many years of trialing and piloting that have taken place and
pays tribute to those who took part.
The report is available on the QCDA website via the following link

AoC London Region Members' Bulletin 91

  • 1. AoC London Region Members’ Bulletin 25 March 2011 Issue 91 Feedback from Thursday 17 March Principals’ Forum Another successful Principals’ Forum took place on Thursday 17 March from 12.30-3pm at Hackney Community College. The Forum covered two main topics: Developing a Community Scorecard for London and ESOL. For the first topic, Maggie Galliers, Principal of Leicester College, talked about her College’s experience in developing a Community Scorecard. AoC Create are working with the LDA to develop the idea of a Community Scorecard for London. The outcomes of this project will be circulated in the near future. For the second topic, Julian Gravatt shared an update on ESOL and funding allocations for London Colleges. The meeting, which included Heads of ESOL as well as Principals, discussed how London Colleges should respond to the funding changes. In addition, AoC National are hosting an ESOL Summit today, on Friday 25 March 2011. Principals and Heads of ESOL were invited to attend. Further information will be circulated after the meeting. If you require copies of the presentations by Maggie or Julian please contact the office. Feedback from AoC London Region Marketing Committee meeting For those of you who don’t know the Marketing Committee is sub-committee of the AoC London Regional Committee, which meets regularly throughout the year to discuss priorities for marketing London Colleges. The Committee met on Wednesday 23 March and confirmed that the next Marketing Managers’ Network meeting will be on Wednesday 25 May 2011 as a half day morning event. The theme for this event will be: “How to get your message out for free” and the AoC London team are currently seeking and booking speakers for this event, more information will be sent out shortly. If you are a Marketing Manager and you would like to attend this event and join the network please contact the AoC London team. At the meeting on Wednesday the Committee also discussed the London Colleges website and it’s current re-vamp, which will be launched prior to the Marketing Managers’ network meeting in May. The Marketing Committee also received a WorldSkills update from Val Chiesa, AoC WorldSkills Project Director, a full update can be read in the section below.
  • 2. AoC London Region Members’ Bulletin, 11 March 2011 WorldSkills London 2011 Update on London Colleges’ Involvement in WorldSkills London 2011 Showcasing London Colleges have responded magnificently to the call for showcasing activities to support the event and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies on 4 and 9 October. Rachel Malic, the WSL2011 Events Manager for Showcasing, is delighted. ‘Two days before the closing date, we had had a very disappointing response, but then the floodgates opened and we now have 182 completed applications for the panels to consider. 41 of these are from London, so many thanks for all your enthusiasm and support.’ A London showcasing panel will review all the applications and the successful ones will be submitted to the national panel chaired by Rob Wye from LSIS on 21 April. Organisations will be notified in early May if they have been chosen to showcase. Other Opportunities at the Event ‘Have a Go’ : the closing date to apply to run one of the ‘Have a Go’ areas at the Event is 31 March. These are being offered in each of the 46 skills areas by a variety of organisations, including colleges. If you think your college could provide one of these, please contact Fran Hubbard to find out more about it: fhubbard@worldskillslondon2011.com Exhibition Space: following on from the information given in the last bulletin about costs for exhibiting (from £3285 + VAT for 4 days), the AoC London Marketing Committee discussed how London Colleges might take a joint approach to exhibiting. 150,000 visitors are expected over the four days, so this is an ideal opportunity to promote your college offer. The National Apprenticeships Service, together with Information and Advice services, will also be talking to visitors and encouraging them to find out about training opportunities. If you are interested in exhibiting with other colleges, please contact AoC London Region. For more detailed information about costs or space available at ExCel, please contact Simon, Alice or Jen from Prospects on 01823 362800. Volunteering: Julia Bowditch is leading on volunteering for WSL2011. There is a range of volunteering activity for both staff and students that can offer different types of work experience over the period 5-8 October. Applications should be made by the end of April and there is information available on: worldskillslondon2011.com/volunteer Page 2 of 8
  • 3. AoC London Region Members’ Bulletin, 11 March 2011 Workshop Supervisors: we put out a call to college staff in the last bulletin to supervise at the Competition. There has been some response to this but there are still gaps in the following areas: Creative Modelling Offset Printing Car Painting CNC Milling If you are interested and think this might contribute to your personal and professional development (as well as giving you experience of competitions at the highest international level) please contact Andy Murfitt at WSL2011 for an application pack and Technical Description. (AMurfitt@worldskillslondon2011.com or 0207 429 2818). Have a Go: in your college outside the event ‘Have a Go’ activities should give people a bite-size taster of a new skill, trade or profession to inspire them to learn and enrol on courses or take up an Apprenticeship. Why not badge activities you have planned for recruitment or parents’ evenings with the WorldSkills logo to link it to the Event? These can be in any skills area relevant to the courses you offer, not just those covered by skills competitions. Information about resources and a pack are available on: www.worldskillslondon2011.com/haveago The Skills Funding Agency will be supporting these local activities with some additional funding. We will include details about this funding and how to access it as soon as they are available. In the meantime, start thinking about how your college might link into the ‘Have a Go’ campaign.
