2. Sexual Problems In Women
“Women's sexual problems range from simply treated yeast infection to vaginismus”
It's high time we accept that a lot of undesirable things happen below the belt. Issues between the
sheets not only damper sex life but badly affect relationships as well. From soreness and redness to
itches and odours, sexual problems can be extremely frustrating and at times it feels like you need a
manual to sleep with your partner. Visit a therapist at the Women’s Health Centre at Apollo clinics to
seek help to enhance a relationship.
Women's sexual problems range from simply treated yeast infection to vaginismus. Lack of sexual
desire, lack of arousal, penetration problems, pain during sex, lack of lubrication and inability of reaching
an orgasm are some of the majorly reported women's sexual problems.
Women who have difficulty or are unable to get aroused or maintain that arousal during sexual activity
may have a condition called female sexual arousal disorder. Generally sexual stimulations lead to vaginal
wall swelling helping the vagina to be well lubricated. But women with this disorder lack the physical
sensations of sexual arousal. Antidepressants, infection of the vagina and hormonal changes resulting
from child birth, relationship problems, anxiety, stress and some other psychological factors can
contribute to this disorder.
Insufficient vaginal lubrication will result in lack of arousal and painful sex. A dry vagina can be a result of
physiological factors such as changes in hormones, side effects of medication or psychological factors
such as stress and anxiety. If the dryness is a result of hormone change oestrogen therapy is generally
advised. Vaginal moisturisers, water based and petroleum based lubricants might be of great help for
pain free sex.
Another complex sexual disorder women experience is vaginismus. It is a physical or psychological
condition that causes an involuntary spasm or tightening of the muscles surrounding the vagina, making
any form of vaginal penetration including sexual intercourse painful. Previously painful sexual
experiences or trauma, medical complications, relationship complications, childbirth, age related
changes and pelvic trauma can be some of the reasons for vaginismus. The process of eliminating a
possible physical or medical condition is very crucial when treating vaginismus. Complicated invasive
techniques, drugs, or hypnosis are not required to treat vaginismus.
Women who do not have orgasms or have difficulty reaching orgasm even when sexually excited might
be having orgasmic dysfunction. Sexual abuse, usage of certain drugs like Prozac, Paxil, hormonal
disorders or changes, medical conditions and monotonous sexual activity can be some of the causes for
orgasmic dysfunction. Many women who have problems are actually pre-orgasmic and are capable of
having a good sex life. Problems surrounding female sexual disorders are generally complex and
diagnosing the physical cause might not be sufficient if the emotional and psychological aspects are not
attended to.
