As of 2010 there are nine federal and 605 state student aid programs and many of the nearly 7,000 post-secondary institutions provide merit aid. Individual colleges and universities may provide grants and need or merit-based scholarships.<br />The application for 2011-2012 Freshman scholarships is available as on August 1, 2010.<br />The 2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available from January 1, 2011. The priority deadline to be considered for maximum grant eligibility is March 31, 2011.<br />The majority of scholarship offers will be made during the months of March and April 2011. Financial Aid notifications will begin in early April 2011.<br />States provide students more than $10.2 billion of aid every year.<br />To qualify for federal, state, and institutional aid, a student must prepare a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year. The earliest filing date is January 1 for the forthcoming academic year.<br />Most aid is provided on a first-come, first-served basis so it is essential that students prepare and submit their aid applications in as close to January 1 as possible.<br />
