4. 1.3 Malaysia Food Information & Traceability (M
(M-FIT)
The Malaysia food information and traceability (M-FIT) system proves that it is possible to
(M t
implement an electronic food traceability system in the Malaysian environment. This pilot project
which commenced in late November 2006 has been deployed to more than 95 companies with a
200 within
period of one year.
While the technology behind the project is fully capable of supporting a national rollout, the scope
Of work was limited to a few participants to make a one year implementation period possible while
proving that it works in the Malaysian context.
Three commodities were selected to represent
three major food sources:
a. Star fruit to represent the crop sector;
b. Tiger prawn to represent the Fishery
commodity and
c. Poultry to represent the live stock.
The M-FIT project provided: Figure 4 Scope of M-FIT Project
• a food information and traceability system for each participant, tailored to individual
company needs,
• integrated food industry best practices, including HACCP,
• an information backbone which links together everyone in the food chain, right through to

buyers in other countries,
• confidentiality of company data, but the opportunity to share selected data with trading
partners or customers when wanted, and
• added-value benefits, such as tracking of stock movements and monitoring of process
