2. Research Project Goals
๏ง Pilot a cheaper and easier method to collect
bicycle data
๏ง Understand impacts of riding skills and
personal characteristics on choices
๏ง Quantify the underreporting of safety data
(crashes &. near-misses)
๏ง Learn where cyclists travel and their level of
traffic and cycling stress
2
3. Why a new app ?
๏ง Emphasis on safety and infrastructure aspects
๏ง New questionnaires and features
๏ง Emphasis on cyclistsโ types
๏ง New questionnaires
๏ง Answers with multiple choices and/or selections.
๏ง Focus on new trip purposes and routes.
๏ง Add reminders, useful info, and tutorials
๏ง Encourage utilization
๏ง More user friendly
3
4. ORcycle: 4 basic parts
๏ง Record Trips
๏ง Report Safety Issues
๏ง Crash or near-miss
๏ง Safety problem (e.g. uneven pavement)
๏ง User Data
๏ง Biking habits and socio-demographic (optional)
๏ง Links to maps and to report to ODOT
๏ง ORcycle is not a substitute for reporting to the
agency that has jurisdiction

16. Value of comments and location
16
โDrivers use the bike lane as a right hand turn lane
before entering the highway during morning rush hour
(8-9 am). Makes it extremely dangerous for cyclists to
pass, as they either are dodging traffic last minute or
duking it out in the lane with angry reactionsโฆโ
23. Value of comments and location
23
โThis intersection is confusing
for cyclists. The bike highway
infrastructure is great, BUT it
is divided in half by this
intersection. It's unclear how
to go through it in a
consistent and predictable
manner, especially going from
East to west.โ
24. Final comments
๏ง Team work
๏ง A lot of work but rewarding results for a pilot
project
๏ง Steep learning curve
๏ง Power of geolocation + Google Maps +
Streetview
๏ง Next stepsโฆ
