  • 31. Attendance information Regular attendance and punctuality are necessary for academic progress and success. Absences from school are considered either excused or unexcused. A student will be considered habitually truant if the student is absent without a legitimate excuse for five (5) or more consecutive school days, for seven (7) or more school days in on (1) month, or fifteen (15) or more school days in (1) year. (letters sent home) Excuse Absence / The Board considers the following factors to be reasonable excuses for time missed at school: Illness Recovery from accident Required court attendance Death in family Observation or celebration of a bona fide religious holiday A student with excused absences must, upon returning to school, make arrangements with his/her teacher to make up missed work. Tardiness – Accepting responsibility is an important part of learning, the belief that getting to school on time is both a student and/or parent/guardian responsibility and mandated school law. If the student is going to be tardy please call and inform the office and when entering the building stop in the office to receive a pass. Make-Up Work – If you wish to pick up make up work for your child you are asked to call the school office BEFORE 9:00 am in order to have the work ready by 2:30. If the request is made after 9:00 am the teacher will do their best to prepare work but it might not be available until the following day. Please pick up the make-up work before 3:30 pm.
  • 32. Beginning of schoolDates to remember August 17 -24 (8:00-2:00) Supply Drop – Off Please feel free to come with your child and drop off their supplies (please label all supplies with their name) and walk around the building. • 33. Class assignments I have already begun the process of placing students for next school year based on student-teacher compatibility, needs and services available. I ask for and gather input from current teachers and look at academic, behavioral, medical, social and emotional needs of the students. I consider positive peers and teachers that will best compliment your children’s learning style. I will not be accepting teacher requests. Class Assignments will be mailed home by the end of June. Supply lists will be sent home with class assignments and posted on the Bay Village School website.
  • 34. Recess Students have recess, either indoors or outdoors, weather permitting, everyday. Recess is an important part of a child’s school day. It provides a time for physical exercise and social interaction. All students are expected to participate in outdoor recess and, therefore, should come to school dressed for the weather. Hats, gloves, coats, scarves, and boots are a necessity on most winter days. Students enjoy outdoor recess unless it is raining or the wind chill is below 20 degrees.
  • 35. transportation Bus riders are dismissed at 2:10 Bus stop information will be posted on the Bay Village Schools Web site approximately two weeks prior to the start of school. All Day Care information or “change of bus stop” requests should be submitted to transportation by mid July. Forms will be sent home with report cards. Additional forms can be found in the school office or the board of education. Walkers/Riders are dismissed at 2:15. All students will either need to be picked up at the designated door by parents and walk with parent to the car or be picked up at the curb. No student will be permitted to run across the parking lot for any reason.
  • 36. 4th grade opportunities Chorus After school on Thursdays from 2:15 until 3:15 Strings During recess twice a week Safety Patrol Before or after school for about 20 minutes
  • 37. CELL PHONES, HEAD-SETS AND ELECTRONIC GAMES Cell phones, head-sets and electronic games are not to be used during school hours. Student access to electronic games for recess time is a the discretion of the classroom teacher. Students are held responsible for their use and safe-keeping. Need to be off and in backpacks during school hours.
  • 38. Westerly walking club Westerly Walking Club is open to all students in the third and fourth grade. The club meets at recess almost every Friday during the school year starting in mid September. The Walking Club is sponsored by the PTA. It was developed to give students an alternative activity on Fridays during recess that emphasized physical activity. Students who join Walking Club are not obligated to participate every Friday. The club is set up to allow students to work at their own pace. The PTA has provided tokens for students who complete certain mileage goals. They also supported building an 1/8 of a mile walking track to allow the students to participate outside as much as possible. Some classroom teachers have embraced the program and make walking part of their school day whenever possible. Over the past 4 years, we have averaged about 215 student members. The PTA is always looking for volunteers to help make the club a success. Talk to your student about the importance of daily exercise and encourage them to join Walking Club.
