The documentary "The Devil Made Me Do It" uses a nonlinear narrative structure to explore various themes such as good vs. evil, the power of media and religion. 1. ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ is a mixed documentary, but also a self-reflective and fully
narrated one as well. As well as that, this particular documentaries narrative structure is
open, single strand, and non-linear.
Throughout the documentary, I also identified various themes that are represented in this
documentary as well. These range from things like good vs evil, power of the media and
youth, to things like religion – callotercism – satanic worship.

2. During the documentary I also visualised many camera works being used. These were:
 Low angle shot: - when it shows Jesus on the cross, from ones perspective, it could
mean God against Manson (good vs. evil)
 Steadicam: - this was used to follow Marilyn Manson but as well as that, it also
helped audience feel close to the action as well.
 Establishing shot: - this helps the audience visualise the various locations and helps
to set the scene; e.g. where the crimes took place
 Tracking shot: - this helps the audience feel as if they are a part of the action,
throughout different parts of the documentary.
 Panning shot: - this
 Point of view shot: - this helps the audience to witness the attack from the nuns
point of view; e.g. involves them.
The Interviews: - were filmed in the right hand corner of the screen in medium close up.

As for the mise-en-scene that occurred throughout this particular documentary, ranged
from family homes, police stations and various streets, to train stations, arcades, hotels and
church cemeteries.
The sounds that were contained in this documentary, they varied from things like male
voice over’s as well as female voice over’s. Other sounds that were used as well were fans
screaming, people talking, dogs barking, as well as sorrowful/mournful music. The type of

3. editing that was used were mainly cuts, but there was also evidence of junketer position
used as well; e.g. putting to things next to each other which wouldn’t go together; e.g. watch
from 0:00 – 2:00 as evidence.
Archive material was also used throughout ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’, from the lighting that
shows Marilyn Manson’s half shaded and half clear, showing the representation of ‘good vs.
evil’. Other evidence of this is TV columns, Marilyn Manson music, newspaper/paper
cuttings, and Marilyn Manson fans.
Graphics from the documentary ranges from the text that appears on the bottom left hand
corner of the page, anchoring the pictures relevance to that part of the sequence; to the
title with the inverted cross.
