Windows (Microsoft) vs
Android (Google) UI Design
Revolution vs Evolution
By Ben Freeman
Android 2.3 (Matias Duarte) 2010
Click to add text
The early Android UI design from Matias Duarte since he was acquitted to be the Head of Android Design, May 2010. His
job was to fix android UI and design the next gen Android tablet interface dubbed "Honeycomb 3.0". Starting with this
update it adds functions over simplicity. Evidence shows Android 2.3 has UI Design Four Problems with this design - the
poor design of the menu tab bar below and secondly the inconsistent icons from 2.2 Froyo and the outdated Google search
bar. Furthermore Android help wizard and the ineffective UI design of the Apps menu. The lockscreen is something that is
not attractive looking with it's vintage 90s dated look.
Windows Phone 7
2010 (Albert Shum)
The rebooted Windows Phone dubbed WP7, it's
UI was a revolutionary innovative design that
changed the way we see UI design today as "Flat"
designs beyond Web 2.0. Metro Design UI
"Magazine" like adapted to the mobile world
touches on how the WP7 UI uniqueness adapts to
people naturally everyday. The UI imposes a sleek,
simple but effective solution with "Tiles" that are
consistent and uniformed without clutter and it is
easy at first site for an average user unlike
Android. Furthermore, it adds a futuristic twist of
"Live dynamic tiles" where you can see all your
daily activities of you and your family and friends.
It is an a effective alternative to Widgets,
especially on Android and static iOS icons . The
Design takes clues from The KIN, Zune and
Microsoft WMC and elements from its roots as
early as MSN Encarta 95. The design emboided
from iconography and typography. "Put People
First".
Android 3.0 (2011)
Matias Duarte
• The design of this 3.0 is
very gimmicky Star Trek
looking UI, that mixes
with Tron style. The UI
design gets dated very
quickly after release. It is
not pleasing in the eyes
to an average consumer,
but jarring. The problem
with widgets that looks
like Android 2.0 design,
something that looks like
from the late 90s - early
2000s.
Android 4.0 (2011) Matias Durate
The Android 4.0 ICS UI design is
a big shift overhaul from 2.3
Gingerbread and improved but
problems still consists like
inconsistency of icons that takes
some elements unchanged from
Honeycomb 3.0 jarring UI.
Focuses on a new font design
Roboto that fits Android theme
but it is not as sleek and
typography natural as Segoe UI
font. But overall it marks a new
refreshed Android that
continues to adapt till this day.
Windows Phone 7.5 (2011) Albert Shum
No dramatic UI changes but significant
design tweaks that evolves the UI design of
WP7 especially with the main instrument
of the people hub concept design that
centers around "Put People First".
Something that Android 4.0 fails to grasp
on simplicity over functions.
Android 4.x Matias Duarte (2012-2013)
The Design of Android 4.x
updates of Jellybean and
KitKat shows little overhaul
design implementations
rather under the hood
changes. It does reflect on
the Android 4.0 ICS update.
The plague continues with
some inconsistent icons
and widgets that are left
from Honeycomb 3.x
updates. It shows that
Android has been maturing
in design, but still had a
long way to go in
consistency.
Windows 8 Albert Shum (2012)
The Windows 8 design imposes a reflection of an revolution of
Microsoft Metro design into more brighter colours in an flat dynamic
'fresh' perspective. That’s brings new life into the modern digital
Windows that imposes revolution in UI design of how people
interactive with the dynamic UI design with its content over chrome
that applies to the principle of Metro design. It marks a new cohesive
era for the design language in Microsoft products and it's brand and
logos/corporate signature logo. Windows 8 marks the revolutionary
UI design of the 2010s decade for changing the UI paradigm from
technology UI design to the web design to make technology from
digital, to digitally natural to the end user of touch and the world of
touch in a touch first era, making a phase of a fade of the traditional
keyboard and mouse era, this is where Windows 8 is specifically
designed for touch. For example it changed the tech industry of how
UI is adapting and trending into a new phase of "Flat" design
influence. But some were turned off by the new design approach.
Matias believed in this approach which it would not work out in the
market in the end. “Windows 8” was branded = Failure.
Windows 8.1 Albert Shum (2013)
Windows 8.1 adds
refreshments to the Windows
8 design with more dynamic
tile look and the dynamic
background wallpapers within
the start menu. It does not
make a big significance from 8.
But it keeps Windows 8 look
fresh and current under the
Windows 8 era. It's
continuation of its design
flows to Microsoft other
products like Office and Xbox
One and Windows Phones. It
brings more consistency
within its design principles.
Android 5.0 Matias Duarte (2014)
The Android 5.0 UI is definitely
improved from the previous
updates. It is neither revolutionary
or groundbreaking but it adds
some WebOS innovations and
Google new design language
Material Design where it adds a
2.5D layer effect mixing 2D & 3D
into one design that applies into a
new era of Android UI design.
Furthermore, it has improved
navigation UI and other under the
hood stuff. However, the problems
still lies within its app launch
inconsistencies where it still falls
short, the third party inconsistent
applications icon designs principles
with no rules to adapt and fit into
the Material Design language.
Windows 8.x.x Albert Shum (2014)
The Windows 8.1 Update 1 has
some under the hood UI changes
but nothing major for a minor
update. But the attention is focus
on the new Windows Phone 8.1
update with it's parallax picture tile
UI design. It has an minimalistic
effect that keeps the Windows
Phone UI fresh and forward. It
adapts well with background
pictures that embodies well with
the principles of Metro designs
that Windows phone users love.
The update for the Windows
Phone was a major significance of
how Windows Phone UI design is
evolving.
Android 6.0 Matias Duarte (2015)
The UI design of Android 6.0 does not take a
massive overhaul over Android 5.0, it takes an
improved adaptation from 5.0 update and
continue to make small elements changes to
its material design. It is a more of a stepping
stone for android rather than a big leap for
Android UI design. It is neither revolutionary
or evolutionary as Windows UI design
changes. But it evolves around it's new
Material Design principles that works better
for Android in the long run when it is finally
matured in consistency. It's getting better but
it has a long way to go before it becomes the
forefront of its applied and accomplished
design principle and it's consistency evolved
around Android UI developments.
Windows 10 Albert
Shum (2015)
Windows 10 UI Design has taken into the adaptive design approach taking the traditional principles with the desktop and
breaking rules with the modern design twist of 8.x and beyond. blended together to make a cohesive consistent experience
that is not groundbreaking and revolutionary as the Windows 8/Zune metro era. But a evolutionary that will continue to
evolve into a new revolutionary era of adaptive design that adapts to our daily lives with every device we use by touch, feel,
hear, speak and see. The new 10 era adapts with " Touch, Continuum, Cortana, Pen, Kinect, VR and HoloLens."
the future of technology with the power of the UI.

The Criticism from Matias Duarte on Windows 10.
(Part 3- Comparison from XP to 10)
• More like 10 Years Ago. Yeah Right Matias...
Windows 10 Platform has blended together to make a cohesive consistent experience that is more than a OS update. It is
evolutionary that will continue to evolve into a new revolutionary era of adaptive design that adapts to our daily lives with
every device we use by touch, feel, hear, speak and see. The new 10 era adapts with " Touch, Continuum, Cortana, Pen, Kinect,
Windows Hello, VR and HoloLens. with these revolutionary technologies" Developers can imagine and dream big and create big
things for the platform from PCs, Xbox, mobile, Internet Of Things to wearables something no other platform is doing. Universal
apps is king to its forefront and one unified platform. Something that Google and Apple could ever dream of doing.
Microsoft & Google Platforms Perspective
Microsoft
• Windows 10
• Unified Platform for all.
Google
• Android
• Chrome OS
Both Separate operating systems.
Remarks from Matias shows that he faces massive competition from his rival Microsoft. It shows Google is fearful of its future and how its biggest
and hated competitor Microsoft is going to surge ahead of them in the long run in the tech world. They should really consider a convergence
within its two platforms Android and Chrome OS, or else they can face an Apple Turn of having four separate OS'es. At the end of the day,
Microsoft has the desktop base and it's the fastest growing software platform update in the market to date. Something Google wish they have!

For Android & Chrome OS. LOL!!!!!!!!!
Aw,
Snap!
At the end of the day, one size does not fit all and it’s not just fancy graphics UI get the job done. It is all about the ‘Usability’ principle (wins every time) when an effective UI
is a adaptive to the UX when designed for everyone. – Ben Freeman

  • 2. Android 2.3 (Matias Duarte) 2010 Click to add text The early Android UI design from Matias Duarte since he was acquitted to be the Head of Android Design, May 2010. His job was to fix android UI and design the next gen Android tablet interface dubbed "Honeycomb 3.0". Starting with this update it adds functions over simplicity. Evidence shows Android 2.3 has UI Design Four Problems with this design - the poor design of the menu tab bar below and secondly the inconsistent icons from 2.2 Froyo and the outdated Google search bar. Furthermore Android help wizard and the ineffective UI design of the Apps menu. The lockscreen is something that is not attractive looking with it's vintage 90s dated look.
  • 3. Windows Phone 7 2010 (Albert Shum) The rebooted Windows Phone dubbed WP7, it's UI was a revolutionary innovative design that changed the way we see UI design today as "Flat" designs beyond Web 2.0. Metro Design UI "Magazine" like adapted to the mobile world touches on how the WP7 UI uniqueness adapts to people naturally everyday. The UI imposes a sleek, simple but effective solution with "Tiles" that are consistent and uniformed without clutter and it is easy at first site for an average user unlike Android. Furthermore, it adds a futuristic twist of "Live dynamic tiles" where you can see all your daily activities of you and your family and friends. It is an a effective alternative to Widgets, especially on Android and static iOS icons . The Design takes clues from The KIN, Zune and Microsoft WMC and elements from its roots as early as MSN Encarta 95. The design emboided from iconography and typography. "Put People First".
  • 4. Android 3.0 (2011) Matias Duarte • The design of this 3.0 is very gimmicky Star Trek looking UI, that mixes with Tron style. The UI design gets dated very quickly after release. It is not pleasing in the eyes to an average consumer, but jarring. The problem with widgets that looks like Android 2.0 design, something that looks like from the late 90s - early 2000s.
  • 5. Android 4.0 (2011) Matias Durate The Android 4.0 ICS UI design is a big shift overhaul from 2.3 Gingerbread and improved but problems still consists like inconsistency of icons that takes some elements unchanged from Honeycomb 3.0 jarring UI. Focuses on a new font design Roboto that fits Android theme but it is not as sleek and typography natural as Segoe UI font. But overall it marks a new refreshed Android that continues to adapt till this day.
  • 6. Windows Phone 7.5 (2011) Albert Shum No dramatic UI changes but significant design tweaks that evolves the UI design of WP7 especially with the main instrument of the people hub concept design that centers around "Put People First". Something that Android 4.0 fails to grasp on simplicity over functions.
  • 7. Android 4.x Matias Duarte (2012-2013) The Design of Android 4.x updates of Jellybean and KitKat shows little overhaul design implementations rather under the hood changes. It does reflect on the Android 4.0 ICS update. The plague continues with some inconsistent icons and widgets that are left from Honeycomb 3.x updates. It shows that Android has been maturing in design, but still had a long way to go in consistency.
  • 8. Windows 8 Albert Shum (2012) The Windows 8 design imposes a reflection of an revolution of Microsoft Metro design into more brighter colours in an flat dynamic 'fresh' perspective. That’s brings new life into the modern digital Windows that imposes revolution in UI design of how people interactive with the dynamic UI design with its content over chrome that applies to the principle of Metro design. It marks a new cohesive era for the design language in Microsoft products and it's brand and logos/corporate signature logo. Windows 8 marks the revolutionary UI design of the 2010s decade for changing the UI paradigm from technology UI design to the web design to make technology from digital, to digitally natural to the end user of touch and the world of touch in a touch first era, making a phase of a fade of the traditional keyboard and mouse era, this is where Windows 8 is specifically designed for touch. For example it changed the tech industry of how UI is adapting and trending into a new phase of "Flat" design influence. But some were turned off by the new design approach. Matias believed in this approach which it would not work out in the market in the end. “Windows 8” was branded = Failure.
  • 9. Windows 8.1 Albert Shum (2013) Windows 8.1 adds refreshments to the Windows 8 design with more dynamic tile look and the dynamic background wallpapers within the start menu. It does not make a big significance from 8. But it keeps Windows 8 look fresh and current under the Windows 8 era. It's continuation of its design flows to Microsoft other products like Office and Xbox One and Windows Phones. It brings more consistency within its design principles.
  • 10. Android 5.0 Matias Duarte (2014) The Android 5.0 UI is definitely improved from the previous updates. It is neither revolutionary or groundbreaking but it adds some WebOS innovations and Google new design language Material Design where it adds a 2.5D layer effect mixing 2D & 3D into one design that applies into a new era of Android UI design. Furthermore, it has improved navigation UI and other under the hood stuff. However, the problems still lies within its app launch inconsistencies where it still falls short, the third party inconsistent applications icon designs principles with no rules to adapt and fit into the Material Design language.
  • 11. Windows 8.x.x Albert Shum (2014) The Windows 8.1 Update 1 has some under the hood UI changes but nothing major for a minor update. But the attention is focus on the new Windows Phone 8.1 update with it's parallax picture tile UI design. It has an minimalistic effect that keeps the Windows Phone UI fresh and forward. It adapts well with background pictures that embodies well with the principles of Metro designs that Windows phone users love. The update for the Windows Phone was a major significance of how Windows Phone UI design is evolving.
  • 12. Android 6.0 Matias Duarte (2015) The UI design of Android 6.0 does not take a massive overhaul over Android 5.0, it takes an improved adaptation from 5.0 update and continue to make small elements changes to its material design. It is a more of a stepping stone for android rather than a big leap for Android UI design. It is neither revolutionary or evolutionary as Windows UI design changes. But it evolves around it's new Material Design principles that works better for Android in the long run when it is finally matured in consistency. It's getting better but it has a long way to go before it becomes the forefront of its applied and accomplished design principle and it's consistency evolved around Android UI developments.
  • 13. Windows 10 Albert Shum (2015) Windows 10 UI Design has taken into the adaptive design approach taking the traditional principles with the desktop and breaking rules with the modern design twist of 8.x and beyond. blended together to make a cohesive consistent experience that is not groundbreaking and revolutionary as the Windows 8/Zune metro era. But a evolutionary that will continue to evolve into a new revolutionary era of adaptive design that adapts to our daily lives with every device we use by touch, feel, hear, speak and see. The new 10 era adapts with " Touch, Continuum, Cortana, Pen, Kinect, VR and HoloLens." the future of technology with the power of the UI. has been accomplished 10 Years ago!
  • 14. The Criticism from Matias Duarte on Windows 10. (Part 1- Comparison from XP to 10) THE TWEETS By Google Designer
  • 15. The Criticism from Matias Duarte on Windows 10. (Part 2- Comparison from XP to 10) • Comparison Windows XP & Windows 10 They look nothing like each other. Take a good look BTW Matias It is the new "Surface Pro 4" not the "Surface 4". Start Menu with App Lists + Shortcuts Start Button + Window Task Bar Recent/Most Used apps Live Tiles Power Essentials Shortcuts Search Menu/Windows Button Continuum UI Tablet Mode Today UI (Present) Advancing Desktop ComputingYesterday (Past)
  • 16. The Criticism from Matias Duarte on Windows 10. (Part 3- Comparison from XP to 10) • More like 10 Years Ago. Yeah Right Matias... Windows 10 Platform has blended together to make a cohesive consistent experience that is more than a OS update. It is evolutionary that will continue to evolve into a new revolutionary era of adaptive design that adapts to our daily lives with every device we use by touch, feel, hear, speak and see. The new 10 era adapts with " Touch, Continuum, Cortana, Pen, Kinect, Windows Hello, VR and HoloLens. with these revolutionary technologies" Developers can imagine and dream big and create big things for the platform from PCs, Xbox, mobile, Internet Of Things to wearables something no other platform is doing. Universal apps is king to its forefront and one unified platform. Something that Google and Apple could ever dream of doing.
  • 17. Microsoft & Google Platforms Perspective Microsoft • Windows 10 • Unified Platform for all. Google • Android • Chrome OS Both Separate operating systems. Remarks from Matias shows that he faces massive competition from his rival Microsoft. It shows Google is fearful of its future and how its biggest and hated competitor Microsoft is going to surge ahead of them in the long run in the tech world. They should really consider a convergence within its two platforms Android and Chrome OS, or else they can face an Apple Turn of having four separate OS'es. At the end of the day, Microsoft has the desktop base and it's the fastest growing software platform update in the market to date. Something Google wish they have!

At the end of the day, one size does not fit all and it’s not just fancy graphics UI get the job done. It is all about the ‘Usability’ principle (wins every time) when an effective UI is a adaptive to the UX when designed for everyone. – Ben Freeman
