PASSIVE VOICE
 -Uses.
 -Estructure.
 -Active to passive transformation.
 -Sentences as examples.
 Jose Luis Bernal Navarrete
USES
Passive voice has two uses:
 1- We use the passive voice when we don’t know who performed
the action or when we don’t want to say who performed the action.
Example: A man was killed.
 2- We use the passive voice when we want to give more
importance to the action instead of who performed the action.
Example: The book was delivered yesterday.
STRUCTURE
Passive voice is made with:
 -Subject.
 -Auxiliar verb (to be). This verb go in the same tense as the verb in
the active voice.
 -Main verb in the past participle.
Let’s see some examples with a few tenses.
-Present Simple:
 Speak/s --- am/are/is + spoken
-Past simple:
 Killed --- was/were killed
-Present Perfect:
 Have/has eaten --- have/has been eaten
-Past Perfect Simple:
 Had felt --- had been felt
-Future with will:
 Will paint --- will be painted
-Going to future:
 Am/are/is going to make --- am/are/is going to be made
-Modal verbs:
 Can solve --- can be solved
 Must solve --- must be solved
 Should solve --- should be solved
ACTIVE TO PASSIVE
TRANSFORMATION
To change an active sentence into a passive sentence, we have to
follow some points. We are going to take an example.
George Martin wrote the book.
 First, the object of the active voice sentence is now the subject:
Active: George Martin wrote the book.
Passive: The book…
 Secondly, the auxiliary verb “to be” is added, in the same tense as
the main verb in the active sentence, with the past participle form of
the main verb.
Active: Gearge Martin wrote the book.
Passive: The book was (“To be” in past simple) written…
 Finally, the subject in active sentence changes into the complement
agent in the passive sentence, and it’s precedded by “by”.
Active: George Martin wrote the book.
Passive: The book was written by George Martin.
SOME EXAMPLES
Now we have some sentences in the active and passive voice as
examples:
1-
Active: Mario writes a letter.
Passive: A letter is written by Mario.
2-
Active: I studied English
Passive: English was studied by me.
3-
Active: Paco has taken a gun.
Passive: A gun has been taken by Paco.
4-
Active: Mark will ride a bike.
Passive: A bike will be ridden by Mark.
5-
Active: Antonio can hear the noise.
Passive: The noise can be heard by antonio.
