Bulletin Board Reflection

           Fall 2007
The purpose of the bulletin board informed Mrs. Hardy’s second grade students

about the importance of Fire Safety in which the procedures for when clothes caught on

fire. The content standards were created to complement current Health education as

related to Social Studies.

        The first content standard involved the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for

Health, Safety and Physical Education titled 10.3.3 B- recognize emergency situations

and explain appropriate responses, including importance of remaining calm, how to call

for help, simple assistance procedures, and how to protect self.

        The learning goal for the bulletin board based on this content standard was that

students will be able to recognize emergency situations and demonstrate appropriate

responses.

        Another content standard involved the Pleasant Valley Elementary Learning

Outcomes/Standards created from the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Civics and

Government 5.1 and 5.4- the learner will demonstrate knowledge of good citizenship

through personal responsibility and respect of others by identifying various conflict

situations (e.g., stop, drop and roll).

        The learning goal for the bulletin board based on this content standard was that

students will be able to identify a conflict situation and demonstrate the knowledge of

good citizenship through personal responsibility and respect of others.

        My mentor teacher hinted the idea of “Stop, Drop and Roll” to me because she

knew that this topic was going to come up soon in the curriculum and become a big deal.

October is Fire Safety Awareness in Mrs. Hardy’s second grade classroom at Pleasant

Valley Elementary. All week students were learning about Fire Safety including my
bulletin board, schools planned activities and co-taught lessons from the student teacher

& me.

        Activities were already pre-planned by Mrs. Hardy and then co-taught between

the student teacher and I. Activities included a creation of a fire escape map, using a

media video “Be Cool About Fire Safety”, shared reading of “A Chair for My Mother”

by Vera B. Williams, followed by a video of Reading Rainbow, and the procedure of

“Stop, Drop and Roll.”

        Overall the effectiveness of the bulletin board created an attractive motivation to

the students, and an informative review of the concepts learned that week on Fire Safety.

        Students at any age should be aware of emergency situations, the earlier the

better. PVE takes time out to plan events and activities informing their students about

Fire Safety. Collaborating with PVE, Mrs. Hardy and the student teacher generated a

variety of strategies and methods of teaching students important information that is used

as a life long comprehension and insight on emergency situations.

        After the bulletin board was displayed, the student teacher, paraprofessional and

mentor teacher gave me feedback. Overall they felt that it was easy to follow. It

contained three steps in which were clear and to the point; also noted attractive, and

developmentally appropriate for this classroom.

        In addition, the students took notice to it instantly and continued to ask questions

such as what it was about and when they were going to learn about it. Having the students

endlessly inquiry, the board gave the students an enthusiasm outlook on what was going

to be taught next, thus was a goal on mine.

The learning goal for the bulletin board based on this content standard was that students will be able to identify a conflict situation and demonstrate the knowledge of good citizenship through personal responsibility and respect of others. My mentor teacher hinted the idea of “Stop, Drop and Roll” to me because she knew that this topic was going to come up soon in the curriculum and become a big deal. October is Fire Safety Awareness in Mrs. Hardy’s second grade classroom at Pleasant Valley Elementary. All week students were learning about Fire Safety including my
  • 3. bulletin board, schools planned activities and co-taught lessons from the student teacher & me. Activities were already pre-planned by Mrs. Hardy and then co-taught between the student teacher and I. Activities included a creation of a fire escape map, using a media video “Be Cool About Fire Safety”, shared reading of “A Chair for My Mother” by Vera B. Williams, followed by a video of Reading Rainbow, and the procedure of “Stop, Drop and Roll.” Overall the effectiveness of the bulletin board created an attractive motivation to the students, and an informative review of the concepts learned that week on Fire Safety. Students at any age should be aware of emergency situations, the earlier the better. PVE takes time out to plan events and activities informing their students about Fire Safety. Collaborating with PVE, Mrs. Hardy and the student teacher generated a variety of strategies and methods of teaching students important information that is used as a life long comprehension and insight on emergency situations. After the bulletin board was displayed, the student teacher, paraprofessional and mentor teacher gave me feedback. Overall they felt that it was easy to follow. It contained three steps in which were clear and to the point; also noted attractive, and developmentally appropriate for this classroom. In addition, the students took notice to it instantly and continued to ask questions such as what it was about and when they were going to learn about it. Having the students endlessly inquiry, the board gave the students an enthusiasm outlook on what was going to be taught next, thus was a goal on mine.
