1. Selena’s hand being on Demi’s arm suggests a sense of closeness and a friendship reflected in the headline: ‘so not frenemies’, reference to Maslows theory of love and belonging. An audience could relate to this as teenagers usually have a close friend or group of friends and understand the need to have this. They are both wearing checked shirts which again shows a sense of collectiveness, but also reflects their age as they are dressed appropriately, this could relate to the audience as it is a young persons fashion and they could relate to what they are wearing. The use of the word crush reflects the audience the magazine is aimed at, the word is quite juvenile but targeting the right audience.
2. The use of Beyonce, a big star. The audience can get personal gratification out of picking up this magazine as they may like Beyonce or even diversion as they are reading about other people lives and not their own . Article on weight and body issues, how to get the ‘perfect’ body. Still the issue of how girls should be skinny. Relates to Maslows heirachy of needs- Esteem needs as girls could read this, look at Beyonce and want to be skinny and fit. Beyonce is dressed in pink which also is a way of targeting the audience as it is a girls magazine. She is also dressed modestly from what we are used to seeing on MTV ect which again reinforces the idea of who the magazine is aimed at.
3. Although a magazine targeted at young girls, no teen girl used on the cover but Justin Bieber as he is a hugely popular star amongst teenage girls. Target audience attracted to the cover as they want to see JB on the cover and feel a sense of love or esteem needs perhaps as they may admire him. Again drawing the audience in, free JB poster makes people want to buy the magazine for the poster also. Article on ‘Sexy hair get it now’ would attract the audience because they would therefore think they could achieve the hairstyles of the stars also.
4. Selena Gomez, recognisable young Disney star. Relate to audience as they can get gratification as they may like her as an actress ect. The way she is dressed is modest and very pretty/girly which reflects the target audience as they are a young audience and the magazine don’t want to give off the wrong image. Another article referencing weight issues, again relating to esteem needs of the audience. The smile and flower in Selena Gomez’s hair reflects the youth and target audience of the magazine.
5. The use of Emma Watson in terms of youth, we know her as Hermione from Harry Potter, immediate recognition from the audience. Conversion/contradiction in some ways as she is a young star yet she is advertising Burberry which is an established high class brand which is not what most young people would be able to afford. Heavy makeup this suggests the advertisement is targeting an older audience as she is not seen as Hermonie now but Emma Watson.
6. “ Identity is complicated, everybody's got one”- David Gauntlet We all, whether we know it or not do have an individual identity and in accordance with Gauntlet having an identity can be complicated. We all strive to become somebody or someone and this can be a challenge, we have our friendship groups which we perhaps do not see as forming our identity but they are. To be friends with someone you have things in common whether it be fashion sense or music taste. As individuals we will automatically get on with people who are interested in what we are, and from there we will build an identity on different factors. Foucault said that we are born with a basic identity and it is hard to change this. An example of this could be if you hung out with a group of ‘chavs’ but you wanted to be friends with the popular crowd, you would struggle to break out of the label chav as that is what people know and have labelled you as. In modern day society, young people especially use social network websites to post pictures, music videos and comments about what they are interested in, the audience could get gratification from this as if for example somebody commented on your photo you would feel satisfaction or happiness from this. The idea of using these websites could add to the idea of building our identity through various forms of new media. Surveillance can also play a big part in our identity as it relates to the idea of a ‘big brother’ society and every action we take is watched, this could have an effect on how we build our identity as we are constantly aware. New media has had a big effect on the way we build our identity as there are many forms we can now use and have free access to such as magazines and the internet. The ideas of Henry Tajfel can also be related to having an identity as he said individuals strive to build their self image based on other factors whether it be other people or things around you. For example if one of your friends started listening to a new band you would perhaps be curious to listen to this band too purely because your friend likes them. You are therefore exploring your identity through different factors. The postmodernism view can be applied to the idea of media affecting our identity because we now see things on the media and we are forced to believe it because we live in a media saturated world. These concepts can be related to Gauntletts statement as we have access to all this new media and factors but it can be confusing because we are exposed to all this yet we may feel we are confused with who we are, new fashions and music are constantly evolving and shaping who we are and what we like. In conclusion, the statement above is very true, in relation to modern day society. In the past we have not had free access to as much media as we do today. With the rapid growth of new media there is so much we can see and it may confuse our identity as we are evolving but the media somewhat faster and it can complicate what we thought we were.
