This is the story of a love triangle, the corrupt system and a journey of self-discovery. The author Chetan Bhagat says that the novel "emerground, Bhagat said, "I felt a special connection to the city when I visited it. It is one of our oldest cities, and people there now have modern aspirations. I thought the contrast would be interesting. The city also has a lot of character. Revolution 2020 is the story of three childhood friends: Gopal, Raghav and Aarti. The story is set in the holy-city of Varanasi. Gopal and Raghav are childhood friends. Aarti is Gopal's closest friend and love interest. Gopal comes from a poor family. Raghav is from an almost well to do family, where as Aarti comes from a kind of bureaucratic and political family. Three of them have their own ambitions in life. Gopal wants to be a rich man, Raghav wants to change the world and Aarti wants to become an air hostess. After the failure in getting through IIT-JEE (Indian Institution of Techonology-Joint Entrance Exam) and AIEEE(All India Engineering Entrance Exam) exams, Gopal is forced to move to Kota to prepare and re-appear for those exams. However Raghav secures a good rank and joins IIT-BHU to fullfill his dream of became a journalist and bring revolution in India. There at Kota he receives the biggest shock of his life when he learns that Aarti has now become Raghav's girlfriend and thus he fails again in the AIEEE. His father cannot bear this and dies. Gopal becomes an orphan. Due to his past debts which was almost 2 lacs, he makes a deal with MLA Shukla to create an engineering college on his disputed land.He became director of the new college and learns about the corrupt system and starts living with it. Raghav finishes his engineering and becomes a trainee reporter in largest selling news paper Dainik. He starts publishing all the wrongdoings of Shukla like ganga action plan scam worth 20 crore which causes harm to Gopal's college.Illegal rezoning of land controversy cause some demolition to ganga tech college. Shukla gets Raghav sacked but Raghav starts his own paper called Revolution 2020. He publishes stuff about the Ganges Treatment Scam and proves that Shukla is a corrupt man. Shukla is forced to resign. Aarti, all this time had been lonely as Raghav had no time for her. She had acquired a job of Guest Attendant at the newly made Ramada Hotel. She invites Gopal there where she reveals her love for him. Gopal finally succeeds in winning her over. He goes to Raghav's office to tell him that Aarti was no longer his and that he had become a more successful man in spite of being uneducated.
