Role of Workers in Accident Prevention


In any industry, safety of human being and machines enhances productivity and helps a
lot of saving .Hence accident prevention is the concern of all, the management, line
manages and workers. Following are the guiding principles of accident prevention.

1.   Accidents are caused, they just do not happen.
2.   Accidents are caused due to unsafe acts and unsafe conditions.
3.   Most of the accidents are preventable.
4.   Accidents can be prevented by breaking chain of events.
5.   For accident prevention, modern technique adopted is safety management system.
6.   Hazards are to be identified risks are evaluated and controlled.
7.   Joint participation and involvement of all is the key to safety management.
8.   Systematic approach is the key to success.
9.   Industrial safety management is an on-going process.

Workers' obligations for accident prevention.
As per section 111 of the Bihar Factories Act 1948 following are the duties of employees
1. Not to interfere with or misuse any appliance, convenience or other provisions.
2. Not to do anything to endanger himself or others.
3. Not to neglect the use of any appliance on other provision.

Section 111 A of the Bihar Factories Act 1948 confers on them the rights
1. To obtain information regarding safety and health at work.
2. To get trained.
3. To inform statutory bodies.

The rights and duties assigned to them provide them ample opportunities to associate in
the activities of accident prevention.

What is expected of them?
Following are the expectations from employees :-
1. To observe discipline
   a) To keep work place clean and tidy
   b) To re-fix guards on moving machines
   c) To check spillage of material
   d) To avoid short circuits
   e) To observes safety norms in operation and maintenance.
   f) To use safety appliances as per work.

2. To improve work knowledge and skill.

     a) To listen to work and safety instructions
b) To know about hazards and risks
     c) To ask and suggest safety measures
     d) To improve work culture by adhering to safe practices.

3.   To Involve in safety activities.
     a) To actively participate in safety meetings and inspections.
     b) To inform managers regarding dangers
     c) To associate in risk assessment and control.
     d) To associate in safety campaigns to arouse safety awareness.


With clear understanding that safety saves and accidents are costly, being conscious
about their rights and duties and involving in safety activities, employees can contribute a
lot in building a strong safety foundation and improve safety culture.
