Undergraduate Summer Placement
Are you a student studying ecology, biology or environmental science? Are you a hard
worker and a team player, interested in gaining valuable experience of ecological
consultancy in England? - If this is you we have a great opportunity for you to join our
ecology team in Chelmsford for your summer break.
This is an exciting opportunity for a student to get well-rounded hands-on experience of
ecological consultancy work. The position will include an opportunity to develop the
following skills, among others:
• Desk-based studies including analysis of protected areas and biological records
• Training in undertaking and reporting phase 1 habitat surveys
• Some involvement with mitigation for reptiles and amphibians
• Assistance with bat surveys, including building scoping assessments, roost potential
in trees and activity surveys using bat detectors
• Training in use of BatSound software to analyse bat calls using recorded sounds and
sonographs
Pay will be at the National Minimum Wage rate per hour based on a 37.5 hour standard
week. Starting and finishing times are flexible but are generally 9:00 to 17:30 while in
the office (with an hour lunch break). You may be required to work different or
additional hours as the job demands (for example, bat surveys may require night
working and reptile surveys/mitigation may require early morning or evening site visits).
To join us for a summer placement we ask that you have completed the second year of
your degree, have a full UK driver’s licence and use of a personal vehicle insured for
business use. All mileage and disbursements will be covered in accordance with our
