2. An orthopaedic surgeon who focuses on upper
extremities and sports injuries, Dr. Bobby Chhabra
serves as a professor, department director, and
athletics surgery consultant with the University of
Virginia. Active in his field, Dr. Bobby Chhabra has
also worked with numerous industry associations, and
maintains status as a fellow of the American
Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
The AAOS recently issued a press release discussing a
study about tennis-related orthopaedic injuries,
published in the academy’s medical journal.
According to the study, the repetitive motions and
force on the elbow and shoulder joints during tennis
present a high risk for injuries.
3. The article also notes that injuries such as
“tennis elbow” are more likely to impact
recreational players.
The AAOS states that almost half of tennis
injuries are related to the upper extremities.
These injuries can be caused by hitting with the
wrist in a flexed position, using excessive wrist
action, short-arming strokes, and hitting with an
open stance. To reduce the risk of tennis
injuries, the AAOS offers a number of technique
recommendations, including using a lighter
grip and hitting the ball in the racquet’s “sweet
spots.”
