1. Presentation by Rose
How do individuals and groups define
their identity/identities and where
are these definitions drawn from?
2. Culture
• We think about culture as a collection of habits
and customs. A culture is a collection of
individuals sharing common identity where we
are able to relate to one another in that
community.
• A culture (or a society) is made up of values (key
priorities) which drive or motivate patterns of
behaviour (norms). The things we do ( behaviour)
are called norms, which are behaviour patterns
associated with a particular culture’s values.
3. Nurture/ Nature
• Most people agree that some of our identity is
shaped by natural instincts and biological/
physical elements (nature) and some is
shaped by social learning (nurture), but how
much of each is debatable.
4. Identity
• Ethnic identity can significantly vary from one
person to another.
• Social class is an identity shaped mainly by the
type of employment.
• Many social scientists argue that social class
differences have become less noticeable today
than was previous case.
