The document summarizes a leadership class project examining opportunities for growth at the Highland City Club. The class applied a human-centered design model to discover issues through member surveys and interviews, ideate solutions, and prototype recommendations. Key findings included that most members were over 50, desires for more diversity, engagement of all members, and a work-friendly space. Recommendations focused on increasing guest attendance, facilitating diverse perspectives, uniting members, and strengthening the community.

Insight: there were a large number of responses from the member survey voicing a desire for a more diverse opinions in program lunch discussions.
Asked: How might we increase this diversity, based on what we learned from the survey results?
Solution: Timed Lunch Discussions - encourages concise and meaningful responses and discussions and allows any and all members a chance to engage and share their opinions as well thus adding to the diversity of the ideas and thoughts amongst group members.

Insight: There was a strong desire for more unity amongst all members - including those involved and those more distant.
So, in accordance with the City Club Mission Statement, we wanted to create an event that would encourage members and staff to discover their common ground and also engage all members in hopes of building even stronger connections with other members and the Club itself.
K. Lu
Solution: came up with the idea of the “State of the City Club” . SCC is a proposed idea that would ideally be held annually, most likely in the summer so they can take advantage of their beautiful grounds. The purpose of the SCC would be to bring all members - both highly active and less active - together to discuss the past present and future of the city club.

During our time with the City Club, we defined a numbers of projects to undertake. We created an executive summary, reworked their membership plans, delivered proposals, and prototyped a “State of the City Club” address. We learned that by adjusting our expectations we were able to make a valuable contribution to the club. While it is unlikely that all of our ideas will be implemented, we believe that the “State of the City Club” will be, and that it will allow the City Club to unite around a common direction and build community. This will have a lasting positive impact on the club as a whole.
