Awards, the Tony Awards began
recognizing the best in theater in
1947, making its debut at the WaldorfAstoria Hotel. Named for the
legendary actress, director, producer,
and leader of the American Theatre
Wing, Antoinette “Tony” Perry, the
awards ceremonies were smaller in
stature in the early days, with an
inaugural audience of 1,000.

Over the years, the Tony Awards gained
prestige and attention, in part due to the
event’s appearance on television, at
which point millions of viewers could
tune in to performances from some of
the world’s most talented stars. Today,
the awards are hosted at Radio City
Music Hall in June to a live audience of
