ENVIROINSITE WITH EQUIS K’NECT ‐ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
OVERVIEW…
EXPLAIN WHAT YOU MEAN BY DIRECT‐CONNECTION
In the past, EQuIS had several EnviroInsite reports that exported data to the native EnviroInsite data
format.  EnviroInsite would read these files, but not be aware of changes to the native database.  Now,
there are no intermediate files.  EnviroInsite connects directly to the database using the same technology
as EQuIS Pro.  As soon as you make a change to data in the EQuIS database, EnviroInsite “knows” about
the new data values – even if there is an ongoing EnviroInsite session and it’s already connected to the
EQuIS database.
One thing to be aware of is that if you change data values in EQuIS when you have already plotted objects
in EnviroInsite, then you may need to redraw the objects to have them reflect the changes to the
database.  Redrawing objects is accomplished by double‐clicking on the object in the plot control tree on
the left and selecting OK.

CAN I ACCIDENTALLY OR INTENTIONALLY CHANGE VALUES IN THE EQUIS DATABASE
FROM ENVIROINSITE?
No.  The program is designed to not allow changes from EnviroInsite.

ARE THERE EQUIS‐SPECIFIC COMPONENTS IN ENVIROINSITE?
Most definitely.  When you are connected to an EQuIS database you will notice an extra EQuIS tab in most
plot object dialog boxes.  These allow you to filter data by location group, task, result type, sample type,
delivery group, and reportable result value (dt_sample.task_code, dt_result.result_type_code,
dt_sample.sample_type_code, dt_test.lab_sdg, dt_result.reportable_result).
Also, there is an EQuIS setup dialog box that can be accessed by selecting Edit ‐> EQuIS Options. This
dialog box is used to view the key dt_facility fields for your selected facility, or to set the non‐detect
multiplier, the sample elevation interval options by matrix type, and the value of
dt_well_segment.seg_type that is used to indicate to EnviroInsite that a field contains information
regarding a well screen.  You will also find data mapping options for wind speed/direction, water
elevation, and stratigraphy data.

CAN I STILL USE THE ENVIROINSITE EXPORT REPORTS IN EQUIS PRO?
Yes, these reports will continue to be supported by EQuIS.  If this is important to you then let EarthSoft
know by contacting the HelpDesk and encouraging them to continue support for these reports.

GETTING STARTED …
HOW DO I INSTALL ENVIROINSITE WITH EQUIS K’NECT?
EnviroInsite 2014 and later releases of EnviroInsite include the EQuIS K’Nect feature.  Email
sales@enviroinsite.com for information on downloading the setup file.  The program may be installed
side‐by‐side with EnviroInsite 2012 and may be used for 30 days at no cost for evaluation purposes.

HOW DO I CONNECT TO AN EQUIS DATABASE?
Open EnviroInsite and select File ‐> Open Database ‐> EQuIS Database.  This will open the standard EQuIS
Pro login window that will enable you to select a server and facility.   The program will then open the
EQuIS Options dialog window.  Check the values there and then select OK.  You can can always return to
this options dialog by selecting Edit ‐> EQuIS Options from the main menu.  You should notice the facility
name in the lower‐left corner and the site coordinates of the mouse location in the lower‐right corner.
Now you can plot wells, contour data, create hydrogeologic models, stiff diagrams, etc.  Go for it.

DATA …
WHAT COORDINATE SYSTEM IS THE DATA BEING PLOTTED IN?
EnviroInsite reads the value of dt_facility.coord_type_code to determine which location value should be
used from dt_coordinates.    If you have entered geographic coordinates (latitude – longitude) and placed
a check in the EQuIS options dialog box indicating that is the case then the coordinates will automatically
be converted either US State Plane or to UTM.  Be sure in that case to place a check in the EQuIS options
dialog box indicating the values are lat‐long and select whether you want State Plane or UTM in the View‐
>Options dialog box before connecting to the data file.

WHAT CONCENTRATION UNITS ARE BEING PLOTTED?
The concentration units are selected from the first instance of the analyte and media matching your
selection in rt_mth_anl_group_member.  The program will first look to reporting_units in this table and if
not populated it will use the value in default_units.  These values can be set by creating analyte groups in
EQuIS.  If no units are found using this approach then the program will create a query that binds
dt_sample, dt_result, dt_test, and rt_analyte and select the first instance where the chemical name and
media match the values of rt_analyte.chemical_name and dt_sample.matrix_code.  If found it will then
use the value in dt_result.result_unit.

HOW ARE NON‐DETECTS HANDLED?
EnviroInsite checks the value of dt_result.detect_flag to know if a result is a non‐detect.  If the value is set
to “N” or “n” then the value is flagged as a non‐detect.  For those instances where the program needs a
numeric value (such as pie charts, time‐history charts, stiff diagrams, classed post plots) then it will
multiply the detection limit by a user‐specified non‐detect multiplier.  The non‐detect multiplier is set in
the Data Mapping tab of the EQuIS options dialog box.  For instances where the program is posting a
value (such as data tables) then it will post the value as a less‐than sign (<) appended by the detection
limit.  The value of the detection limit is the first non‐null value from dt_result.reporting_detection_limit,
dt_result.method_detection_limit, and dt_result.quantitation_limit.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE DETECTION LIMIT IS NOT LOADED?
As mentioned above, EnviroInsite loads the detection limit from the first non‐null value of
dt_result.reporting_detection_limit, dt_result.method_detection_limit, and dt_result.quantitation_limit.
If these are all null (ie., not populated) then EnviroInsite will assume that the detection limit is zero.

HOW ARE WATER ELEVATIONS CALCULATED?
EnviroInsite uses the same functions for evaluation of water levels as the Water Levels report in
EnviroInsite.  The parameters for the water level evaluation are specified in the EQuIS Options dialog box.
For more information on the calculation procedures and parameters please consult the EarthSoft
documentation.

September 12, 2013

WHAT FIELDS ARE USED FOR SOIL AND GEOLOGIC DATA?
EnviroInsite uses the value in dt_lithology.material_name for all plots of Boring data in EnviroInsite.
These are used in the full page boring log plots and in any plot called by selecting the menu item Plot ‐>
Boring.  The field used for plots of Stratigraphy data is selected by the user in the Mapping tab of the
EQuIS options dialog box.  Stratigraphy data is used to denote hydrogeologic units and are used in any
plot that is started by selecting the menu item Plot ‐> Stratigraphy.  By default, the program will use the
contents of dt_lithology.geo_unit_code_1 for Stratigraphy data, although the user may also elect to use
geo_unit_code_2, geo_unit_code_3, geo_unit_code_4, or geo_unit_code_5.

THE FAQ ANSWERS KEEP REFERING TO THE “FIRST NON‐NULL VALUE”.  WHAT DOES
THAT MEAN?
In some cases there are redundant or closely related fields that may be used slightly differently by users
of the EQuIS database.  If for instance there were two fields that contained related data such as
table_1.field1 or table_2.field2.  If the documentation above said that the used value was the first non‐
null value of field1 or field2 that would mean that the program first looks in field1.  If it finds a value in
field1 then it’s done.  If there is no value in field1 then it will look to the value in field2 and use whatever
value is in that field.  The same approach is used in many of the views and functions that are integrated
into EQuIS Pro reports, functions, and views.

WHY CAN’T I CREATE ANY OF THE GEOCHEMISTRY PLOTS (STIFF, PIPER, SCHOELLER,
OR DUROV DIAGRAMS)?
EnviroInsite requires the equivalent weights to be entered for any one of these plots.  These are loaded
into rt_analyte_detail.equivalent_weight.  Our convention is that the equivalent weight of anions are
entered with a negative value and the equivalent weight of cations are entered with a positive value.  Be
sure to enter these in units that are consistent with the units of the analytes to be plotted.  In some cases
you may also find that you are able to start the plots, but no results are appearing in your diagrams.  Be
sure that there are concentration values specified for all of the anions/cations that you have selected to
appear in your plot.

WHAT FIELDS ARE USED FOR THE DOWNHOLE DATA THAT APPEAR AS GEOPHYSICS
PLOTS IN STRIP LOGS, BORING LOGS, AND X‐SECTION PROFILE PLOTS?
The data values for these plots are stored in dt_downhole_point_data.depth and
dt_downhole_point_data.param_value.  Be sure that you have an associated record in dt_coordinate and
dt_location.  Since there are no depth units in dt_downhole_point_data, EnviroInsite assumes that these
are in the same depth coordinates as specified in dt_facility and therefore plots the values without
applying any unit conversion to the depth values.

DO I HAVE TO POPULATE DT_TEST.FRACTION AND/OR DT_SAMPLE.MATRIX_CODE?
No, it’s not obligatory.

Page 7

September 12, 2013

WHAT FIELDS DO I POPULATE TO FILTER BY LOCATION TYPE?
Selections are made by the user from the contents of rt_location_type.location_type_desc.  Make sure to
populate dt_location.loc_type, rt_location_type.location_type_code and
rt_location_type.location_type_desc.   The fields dt_location.loc_type,
rt_location_type.location_type_code must share a common value in order to determine the value of
location_type_desc for a given location.

WHAT FIELDS DO I POPULATE TO FILTER BY THE GEOLOGIC UNIT IN DT_WELL?
Selections are made by the user from the contents of rt_geologic_unit.geologic_unit_desc.  Make sure to
populate dt_well.geologic_unit_code, rt_geologic_unit.geologic_unit_code, and
rt_geologic_unit.geologic_unit_desc.   The fields dt_well.geologic_unit_code and
rt_geologic_unit.geologic_unit_code must share a common value in order to determine the value of
geologic_unit_desc for a given location.

DEPTH / ELEVATION DATA …
WHAT ELEVATION UNITS ARE BEING USED?
All elevation data are converted to the units specified in dt_facility.elev_unit for the selected facility.  This
includes surface elevations and water level elevations.  Depth values are also converted to the same set of
units.

IF I’M ONLY PLOTTING PLAN MAPS THEN WHAT DATA NEEDS TO BE POPULATED?
This answer applies only to plotting of concentration values.  Be sure to populate dt_result.result_numeric
and to have corresponding records in dt_test, dt_sample, dt_location, and dt_coordinate.  A dt_well
record is not necessary for the sys_loc_code specified in dt_sample.  The string value of
dt_result.result_text will be used in posted value and data table plots so long as the native units in
dt_result and the selected concentration units are the same.  For plotting of water level values the
necessary data fields depends on which of the EQuIS‐options are selected for calculation of water levels.
Some may for instance require top‐of‐casing or other reference elevations.

WHAT ADDITIONAL FIELDS NEED TO BE POPULATED TO PLOT CONCENTRATION
VALUES OR WATER LEVEL MEASUREMENTS ON X‐SECTIONS OR IN 3D?
In order to do this you need to have field values specified that define the surface elevation, top of casing
elevation, sample interval depth, and well bottom depth.  Consult the FAQ answers that follow to
understand which fields in the EQuIS database are used to define these values.

EnviroInsite – EQuIS K’Nect FAQ

Page 8

September 12, 2013

HOW IS THE SURFACE ELEVATION DETERMINED?
EnviroInsite uses dt_coordinate.elev for the ground surface elevation at a well or other location point.
The coordinates of c.elev are presumed to be the first non‐null value of either dt_coordinate.elev_unit or
dt_location.units.  If neither is populated then no coordinate conversion is executed.  If
dt_coordinate.elev is not populated then it will take the elevation to be the maximum dt_coordinate.elev
value.  If there are no values specified then the surface elevation will be presumed to be zero.

HOW ARE THE SAMPLE DEPTH INTERVALS DETERMINED?
The sample elevation intervals are derived from either dt_well_segment.start_depth and
dt_well_segment.end_depth or from dt_sample.start_depth, dt_sample.end_depth.  Which field are used
in a particular case is media‐dependent and can be selected by the user from the Sample Interval Horizon
tab of the EQuIS options dialog.  By default, if the dt_well_segment option is selected then records with
dt_well_segment.segment_type equal to “SCREEN” are used for the start and end depth.  If you want to
use some other field value to indicate a well screen within dt_well_segment then that may also be
selected from the same tab of the EQuIS options dialog.  If no depth interval is available then the
measurement top and bottom depths are taken to be zero.  Unit conversions are applied based on either
dt_well_segment.depth_unit or dt_sample.depth_unit.

HOW ABOUT THE SAMPLE DEPTH RANGE OF WATER LEVEL MEASUREMENTS?
The sample interval for water elevations are assigned based on the screen depth range in
dt_well_segment. If there is no dt_well_segment record for the location associated with a water level
measurement then it is recorded as occurring at the ground surface elevation.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T POPULATE THE DEPTH UNITS FIELD IN
DT_WELL_SEGMENT OR DT_SAMPLE?
If either the dt_well_segment.depth_unit or dt_sample.depth_unit are not populated then EnviroInsite
assumes that the value is in the native elevation unit coordinates specified in dt_facility.elev_unit.

HOW IS THE WELL BOTTOM DEPTH DETERMINED?
EnviroInsite uses the first non‐null value of dt_location.total_depth or dt_well.depth_of_well.  If neither
are populated then EnviroInsite will assume that the well bottom depth is zero.  This will have no effect
on plan‐view plots.  The depth units are assumed to be contained in dt_location.units.  If this is not
populated then dt_well.depth_unit is used.  If neither is populated then EnviroInsite will not apply a unit
conversion to the specified depth value.

This is done to ensure that you have rights to the database and facility that are used by the EnviroInsite
documents.  One shortcut you can apply is to select your facility and database from the EQuIS Favorites.
The EQuIS database interface allows you to select a Favorite as a short‐cut to a database and facility that
you have previously logged into.  If you select a Favorite when connecting to a database within
EnviroInsite then when you save and later load an EnviroInsite document you will not be prompted to log
in again so long as that Favorite name exists on your computer.

WHAT EQUIS FIELDS CAN BE USED TO FILTER THE PLOTTED DATA?
All data plots carry a special EQuIS data query tab from which you can select one or more Location
Groups, Sample Types, Tasks, Lab Test Delivery Groups, Result Types, and Reportable field values.  You can
also select based on the value of dt_location.location_type_code or dt_well.geologic_unit_desc from the
standard data query tab under the Screen Group and Class dropdown boxes.

CAN I CREATE WIND ROSE CHARTS?
Yes.  Be sure to select the values of dt_location_parameter.param_code that will are storing your wind
speed and wind direction from the EQuIS Options dialog box.  Then select Charts from the menu at the
right of the EnviroInsite interface and select Plot ‐> Wind Rose from the new view window.

WHAT ABOUT SUPPORT FOR ORACLE?
Support for Oracle is coming.  The schedule depends on a number of factors, but it should be ready by
January 2014.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BROWSE DATA FEATURE IN ENVIROINSITE?
This will not be supported in EnviroInsite.  Ample capabilities for browsing and filtering data exist within
EQuIS Pro and will not be duplicated in EnviroInsite.

ARE THERE ANY FEATURES NOT SUPPORTED IN ENVIROINSITE K’NECT?
Any feature that is used to change database values has been disabled.  That includes the Insert Well and
Modify Stratigraphy features.

ERROR AND WARNING MESSAGES…
WHY DO I GET THE ERROR MESSAGE “COULD NOT LOAD FILE OR ASSEMBLY
‘EARTHSOFT.EQUIS …”  WHEN I CONNECT TO AN EQUIS DATA FILE?
EnviroInsite relies on the EarthSoft login routines to ensure that file and facility permissions are
respected.  This requires access to several dlls that are installed with EQuIS Pro.  This message arises in
the event that something has gone awry in the search for those dll files.  Please contact the EQuIS Pro
help desk if you see this message.

WHY DO I GET THE WARNING “THERE MAY BE OUTLIERS IN COORDINATES AT …” WHEN I
CONNECT TO AN EQUIS DATA FILE?
When you connect to an EQuIS database, EnviroInsite does a statistical evaluation of the locations in
dt_coordinate to determine if there are values that do not appear to have been entered correctly.  These
can be problematic in displaying the site features so EnviroInsite is making you aware of these locations
and asking you to confirm that they have been entered correctly.

WHY DO I GET THE WARNING “NO RECORDS FOUND.  CHECK CONSISTENCY OF
COORD_TYPE_CODE AND IDENTIFIER IN DT_FACILITY AND DT_COORDINATE” WHEN I
CONNECT TO AN EQUIS DATA FILE?
When you connect to an EQuIS database, EnviroInsite checks whether records exist in the EQuIS table
dt_coordinates with field values in coord_type_code and identifier that are consistent with the same
fields in dt_facility.  If none are found then this message will appear.  You should then either add records
to dt_coordinate and dt_location or modify the values of coord_type_code and identifier in dt_facility.

WHY DO I GET THE ERROR MESSAGE “ERROR:  DT_FACILITY.COORD_TYPE_CODE NOT
POPULATED”?
The field dt_facility.coord_type_code is essential for use of EnviroInsite with EQuIS K’Nect.  Please
determine the appropriate value and populate this field.  It must be consistent with values in
dt_coordinate.

WHY DO I GET THE ERROR MESSAGE “ERROR:  DT_FACILITY.IDENTIFIER NOT
POPULATED”?
The field dt_facility.identifier is essential for use of EnviroInsite with EQuIS K’Nect.  Please determine the
appropriate value and populate this field.  It must be consistent with values in dt_coordinate.

September 12, 2013

WHY DO I GET THE ERROR MESSAGE “ERROR:  DT_FACILITY.ELEV_UNIT NOT
POPULATED”?
The field dt_facility.elev_unit is essential for use of EnviroInsite with EQuIS K’Nect.  Please determine the
appropriate value and populate this field.  If elevation data is specified elsewhere in units different than
specified in this field then make sure that the unit conversion values have been specified in the
rt_unit_conversion_factor table.
