1. Buckeye Blooms, a flower farm and floral design studio located near Lima, Ohio, is looking for an
energetic farm apprentice for the 2014 growing season.
This is a great opportunity for an individual passionate about farming and/or growing flowers to learn
and work at one of Ohio’s leading “farmer florist” operations. The apprentice will learn about and
assist with the following:

Sowing seeds
Soil fertility and bed preparation
Transplanting plugs and seedlings
Harvesting and processing cut flowers
Managing weeds
Planting bulbs and corms
Cleaning tools, buckets, etc
Selling flowers at local farmers markets
Pest and disease management
Season extension & hoophouse management
Irrigation
Composting
Marketing & sales
Basics of floral design
Operation of farm equipment including tractor, tiller and mower
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be dependable, hard-working, have a strong back and
willing to work in all types of weather. The ideal candidate will have some previous farming or
gardening education and/or experience and genuine interest in sustainable agriculture. Applicants also
must be willing to tolerate peacocks, a crazy farm dog, lots of barn cats, and have a sense of humor.
The apprenticeship is available mid-May through mid-October, during the prime season for farmers
markets and weddings. Work hours are flexible. Start and end dates can be adjusted for the right
candidate.
Buckeye Blooms will provide the apprentice with room and board, a plot to grow your own vegetables
for consumption or sale, plus a generous share of farmers’ market sales.
