  1. May 4, 2007 - Greensburg, Kansas in the aftermath of an EF5 tornado.
  2. Greensburg, Kansas is now THE town setting the green standard in building a sustainable community. When the town was ravaged by the tornado, who knew Greensburg would end up with that distinction. Now as they’ve “risen from the rubble,” we see in Greensburg a green city hall, a green local hospital, plans for a K-12 green school and even a green bank. When I say “green”, I’m referring to buildings designed for sustainability. For example, the town’s city hall is rated LEED platinum, has solar panels and a green roof. The hospital is energy efficient, uses heat recovery strategies and natural light throughout 75% of the building. The school which will be completed later this year will have geothermal heating and a wind turbine. The bank features a high efficiency HVAC system and an ICF frame. (Insulated Concrete Form)
  3. Community leaders, businesses and residents of Greensburg have pulled together with a forward thinking goal of building a better, stronger and greener town.
  4. And this is their vision for a greener Greensburg.
  5. Your town or city can also be a model community of structures built with sustainable and affordable green design, construction, and practices. GOING GREEN DOES NOT REQUIRE A KANSAS TORNADO.
  6. This workshop will offer solutions and suggestions for the possibilities of ways to transform our communities into more environmentally friendly places - disaster or not.
  7. Today’s workshop is designed to be fun and interactive yet useful and informative. My hope is that you’ll leave here with “three green nuggets” that will sprout in the fields of your hometown. In today’s session, we’ll…
  8. So what is sustainability?
  9. … according to the USGBC. And besides that, they consume a large portion of resources and produce megatons of waste.
  10. Employee productivity Green jobs Energy/cost savings Environment/people
  11. The federal government is leading the way on sustainability.
  12. Prez O has set energy targets for efficient and sustainable buildings & reduced petro consumption in vehicles. 30% reduction in vehicle fleet petroleum use by 2020 26% improvement in water efficiency by 2020 95% of all applicable contracts will meet sustainability requirements 50% recycling and waste diversion by 2015
  13. In doing so, the local government has
  14. ...to further sustainability and climate protection practices.
  15. With Federal and local governments leading the way, companies and businesses are realizing the value of green building too. An Aberdeen Research Group study found that top performing companies value environmental stewardship and this is driving their sustainability policies.
  16. Before we get started with ideas about what’s going on where you live, I’d like to share with you some INTERESTING, COOL and EXCITING ideas that are underway in communities across the country. For example, in Phoenix, Arizona…
  17. In Tallahassee, Florida initiatives that led to award by the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) are
  18. In Chicago, Illinois… Chicago Transit Authority Chicago Public Schools
  19. In Portland, Oregon… www.sustainableportland.org
  20. Now let’s discuss what’s going on in your community. I’m interested to hear what’s new where you live. Would anyone like to share with us some of the green projects, developments or practices in their area?
  21. We all know that natural weather occurrences can wreak havoc on our long established and developed communities. I’m from coastal Florida where hurricanes and their aftermath can be like Ivan the Terrible! We love our way of life and the weather. But, we also recognize that when weather devastation occurs and we rebuild, we need to rebuild more efficiently and incorporate green design principles. And remember, there are still a few U.S. cities struggling during these economic times to recover and rebuild.
  22. Like Greensburg, Cedar Rapids, Iowa is also currently rebuilding.
  23. Speaking of connections, these three cities all have one thing in common. They are incorporating efficient green building initiatives.
  24. Austin is green ya’ll!
  25. * Develop a strategy for the installation of solar technology throughout Boston , including mapping feasible locations, preparing a project-labor agreement, and planning the city-wide bulk purchase, financing, and installation of solar technology. * Work with local organizations to maximize Boston's participation in state incentive programs and innovative financing initiatives. * Create a successor non-profit organization to implement the long-term goals of the partnership in cooperation with the Boston Energy Alliance.
  26. San Jose, what can I say? - You are here!
  27. What I’d like to do now is have you join together in groups. For this exercise, each group is going to discuss and plan ways to green a project. Each group will have a folder containing details of the project. There are additional instructions inside the folder. We’ll work on this in groups and then take some time to discuss and share what each group came up with. BUILD GREEN! Teresa, switch to other PPT!
  28. O.K., so let’s take a few moments to discuss those wonderful implementations you all came up with.
  29. As a reward for all your efforts, I’d like to present each group with an award - A Green Building Award!
  30. Well, that was wonderful. We’ve heard some great ideas on green designs, construction and practices. These are the types of green nuggets we can take away to benefit our communities. I applaud you all for your out-of-the-box creative ideas. So, how much green is all this “going green” going to cost?
  31. In analyzing the costs and benefits of green building, it’s important to realize that there are INNOVATIVE ways to approach the issue. One way is by examining some of the BEST PRACTICES developed and realized by other cities. For instance, in Alexandria, Virginia, the City will see LONG TERM BENEFITS from its energy conservation projects with positive results in energy savings.
  32. Insulation Lighting Heating & Air systems and with efficient water heating systems
  33. For instance, according to researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California… Something to keep in mind when planning ways to reduce cooling costs.
  34. While I’m not an environmental economist or financial analyst, I can tell you that the possibilities of going green can be more beneficial than you might expect. Just take a look at how Portland benefited from retrofitting traffic signals. Reduced energy consumption by about 80%
  35. If your city, educational institution or community wants to implement green design, operations or practices, it is possible.
  36. And if that’s not enough, some cities, schools and communities are coming up with creative financing strategies as they’ve done in Los Angeles. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, particularly the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) funds, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants (EECBG), and Qualified Energy Conservation Bonds.
  37. Earlier, we talked about how Chicago was taking advantage of its share of ARRA funding. Billions of dollars have been doled out from other sources as well. Boston has…
  38. COST SAVINGS IS THE NAME OF THE GAME. Let’s look at a few saving strategies… Fairmont hotels work diligently to minimize waste stream and conserve natural resources, particularly through energy and water conservation. They also offer eco-meetings and conferences that encompasses eco-accommodation, eco-cuisine, eco-service and eco-programming that encourages minimum waste diversion and environmental awareness. Their Green Partnership Program, a company-wide stewardship program, strives to minimize their properties’ operational impact on the environment through resource conservation and best practices. This is one company with a great focus on environmental initiatives. For example:
  39. For instance,
  40. We are on the cutting edge of the possibilities of green development and sustainable building.
  41. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with such a wonderful group. Believe me, the exchange of information and ideas has been so rich. Don’t just keep all this information to yourself - Share! And let those green nuggets sprout.
