3. 3
Drinking water quality
EU and UK Drinking Water Regulations
Standards for a number of chemicals, including:
– Pesticides 0.1µg/l
– ‘Total’ pesticides 0.5µg/l
4. 4
The metaldehyde problem
0.1 µg/l standard applies metaldehyde
Legal requirement for water companies
Metaldehyde is routinely found in many water sources at levels
above 0.1 µg/l
Not removed by conventional water treatment
Additional treatment is extremely expensive and energy
intensive
What else could we do to solve this problem?
7. 7
Possible solutions
Catchment Management
Working with pesticide users to raise awareness and
encouraging best practice
Thames Water is trialling a variety of projects throughout the
River Thames catchment
PES is a form of catchment management – paying pesticide
users to go beyond best practice
Also trialling abstraction management at Farmoor WTW later
this year
9. 9
What would we like from this trial?
Investigate the effect of different land management practices on
metaldehyde use
Find out what farmers would need to enable them to take part in PES
schemes in the future
To monitor metaldehyde concentrations associated with the different
land management practices

What we need to know today
Are you interested in participating in this trial?
Information on land management practices
Are you willing to be involved in a sampling programme?
Can you see any potential problems with this approach?
Are you willing to support our abstraction management trial by telling
us when you have applied metaldehyde this autumn?
11. 11
Next steps
Determine sampling programme
– Appropriate sample points
– Weekly samples
– Communicate results to participants or individuals
