Edna Menon • I have had the privilege of working with remote R&D teams based in India and Europe. While working
in global teams is fun, time zones, cultural differences, etc. can create serious challenges.
It makes sense to have product management based in India & China as market requirements can be quickly clarified
by R&D when the product owner is accessible in person.
Product marketing should be based closer to the target market(s). However, as China and India are becoming major
consumers of North American products due to their growing economies, it also makes sense to have product
marketing based there if the target market is primarily Asian.

#prodmgmttalk Hiring a PM in India helps the engineering teams in India succeed and build much better products, be more
empowered. Rarely is the PM hired in India without an engineering team here. Customer interaction is critical for a PM, and can be
easily managed through periodic travel, social media and phone/ video. Additionally, India is closer to key markets like EMEA and
APAC.

#prodmgmttalk, biggest challenge is time zone difference, but that's fairly easy to manage and customers are typically very flexible
too. The biggest challenge is often dealing with gaining "internal mindshare" among the company board/ executives.

have split the PM function into "inbound" (engineering focused) vs. "Outbound" (market focused) with the "inbound" PM being in
India. However that does not lead to full enablement of the product teams.
