PERSPECTIVE

Process related risks
- Depending on ore/process type – technical challenges
- Complicated process – importance of process optimisation, utilisation of
automation, chemicals dosage: quantity, quality etc.
- Measuring of right parameters with appropriate instruments and
optimised frequency?
- On line measurements – enough, besides manual and lab measurements?
- Sampling and sampling points enough, along the production process –
assay data of internal, external labs
- Maintenance – service, calibration – also preventive!
- Process waste management
- Process knowledge – experienced, specialised employees – skilled people
enough? And trained?!
All affecting the production efficiency
the environmental performance
the social acceptability

External Environmental risks
caused by
- weather conditions
- climate change
• Temperature
• Precipitation
• Floods?

Environmental risks and challenges
Risks now and in the near future – quite easy to
identify
Preventive actions successful almost always
Risks in longer term – not that easy to identify
Leading very likely to unexpected situations,
Preventive actions may not be successful
Post operational time: even more difficult…!
In Mining the longer term effects play nowadays
even a bigger role! All the way the right data and
observations should be collected.

What is/should be the monitoring and risk management?
and delivering
= Dynamic, Early Risk Management System,
Giving reliable forecasts
At the moment: ’Still way to go’, things should be focused on
with longer time perspective…
There are available tools, all the data just to be utilised more.
Target: A monitoring system applicable in mining environment, giving a possibility to
combine data and parameters from many different sources (environment, process,
laboratory – internal and external,,,,) according to the needs
MONITORING AND RISK MANAGEMENT – A MINING COMPANY PERSPECTIVE
Generated information (e.g. by correlations) of key parameters, indicating possible
coming issues/anomalies in process, emissions etc. and also and warning about
unexpected situations – the earlier the better, the easier the better!
to be reacted on early enough
to be taken into account in decision making to minimise the risks

Investing on Early Warning and taking less risks…
OR
Savings on costs, resources, but taking more risks… Maybe you
actually were not saving!
Which one you choose?
’To become a winner, you should be two steps ahead!’
