This document summarizes ongoing activities in 2013 by CGIAR consortium members. It outlines activities across four objectives: 1) developing more resilient livelihoods for vulnerable households, 2) increasing stable and higher income for intensifiable households, 3) sustainable management of land, water and genetic resources in pastoral systems, and 4) integrated and effective service delivery institutions. Key activities include characterizing livelihoods, identifying management options, piloting technologies, and strengthening innovation systems. Responsible partners include ICRISAT, ILRI, IWMI, BIOVERSITY, national agricultural universities, and NGOs. Milestones focus on surveys, assessments, demonstrations, modeling, and institutional mapping to achieve the objectives.

suitable for different farm typologies and that can increase farmers/system resilience and
identify traditional coping/adaptation mechanisms to vulnerability:
Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners
Identify existing agricultural technologies and their performances for the vulnerable
sites and identify entry points to improve agricultural production and discuses with
partners ( ICRISAT, ILRI, Private resource persons- 2013)
Experiment and demonstrate selected promising technologies( as entry point) that
enhances resilience( ICRISAT, GRAVIS 2013 and beyond)
Pilot weather based crop and livestock insurance model with insurance providers
( IWMI, ICRISAT-2013 and beyond)
4. IDOs: More resilient livelihoods for vulnerable households
in marginal areas
Activity title: Analyse, within target regions, of the trade-offs among options, and
knowledge-based systems for customizing options to sites and circumstances
Activities description: Analyse trade-offs, ex-ante impacts, for different technology
options for the upstream and downstream sites and people:
Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners
Map and analyse plot and landscape scale land use/ land cover and compare across
temporal and spatial scale ( ICRISAT 2013) ;
Collect soil samples and analyse for major limiting factors (ICRISAT; CAZRI 2013 and
beyond);
Identify and document hot spots areas for biophysical intervention and these
biophysical spatial target areas linked to other livelihood assets (through PRA and
vulnerability assessment ( ICRISAT-2013)..
5. IDOs: More stable and higher per capita income for
intensifiable households
Activity titles: 1) Characterize livelihoods and ecosystems and synthesis lessons across
potentially intensifiable systems; 2) Asses technologies specific to crop, tree and livestock
that are suitable for different farm typologies and that can increase farmers/system per
capita income
Activities description: Characterize household (HH) livelihood assets, production systems
and vulnerability (quantitatively ) and HH livelihood and production strategies :

All milestones and CGIAR_CONSORTIUM members are the same as in IDO1. What
changes is the national partners. ( UAS, ANGRAU, AF-Ecology Centre the same time
